audio upgrade help
I don’t even know what a DSP is. I never thought it would be this crazy . My brain hurts from all this lol I figure a new radio some speakers and an amp and boom I’d be done .i hate to say it but Even with all the bad reviews boom is starting to sound pretty good with its plug and play . I was all set on the hertz but now idk. For one I don’t know what a DSP is, I’ve read they are not water proof only water resistant. And I read on a forum about how you have to modify your lower fairings to make them fit....
Given that you have a hu and $1000 budget and a hope to retain fm
id look for opinions on the sound digital 800.4 amp, Hertz HCX 165 in the fairing and hertz sv165 in the lowers.
from most of my reading here all those pieces get very good reviews and would give you a very good system start.
the waters are getting muddy here but if you listen to the likes of bates, travelingypse, tailwind etc. (The ones that know what they are talking about is obvious). They’ll steer you right.

Ok then I’m set on speakers and amp, now the next question....lower fairing speaker box. Right now I have the basic glove boxes . I’m thinking I should go pick up a set of Harley lowers speaker pods? What all do I need? I don’t really trust the cheap eBay ones and I know Harley is expensive but usually pretty good quality when it comes to that stuff. Part numbers would help a lot. Just for reference it’s a 2013 Electra glide ultra limited . If all that makes a difference I don’t know . Lol

Alton if I understand correctly you have already purchased an aftermarket head unit that has handlebar control functionality built in. It also has industry standard preamp outputs to plug into aftermarket amps. If that is the case then a lot of your work is already done for you so to speak.
I am one of those that feel a DSP is something folks get into after they get their feet wet and have run the system for a while. Some of us never feel the need for one. If you don't get the tinkering bug and get really interested in changing things around you may never have the desire for one. When I did my first basic upgrade I concentrated on just an amplifier and the four basic speakers in my 2010 Ultra. I ran it that way for a while to get used to it and work the bugs out of it. After a while I then started asking about lowers and what speakers folks were using in them. That way I wasn't trying to do the whole mess at one time.
If you are the type that likes to take things slow maybe just install your head unit and learn how it works. While you are tinkering with that you could continue to research amps and speakers and such. Whatever you decide to do there are folks here that are willing to answer questions for you at each step of the way.

Slow Down! lol Do not get all caught up in plug and play and you do not want Boom anything. I had never done a stereo system on anything before I did my first one on my bike. It's really not that hard and I consider the install pretty much plug and play except the handlebar control module and even that was nothing difficult. You are not going to find anything that is 100% water proof. Water resistant is as good as it gets and I wouldn't even be that concerned with using stuff that wasn't water resistant. I would suggest not going with a DSP with your first install with out much experience to make it simpler and to get your feet wet. The Hertz speakers you listed will serve you well.
roll on here about using the term DSP in every post. Yes it’s a great tool but not everyone wants or needs one. Don’t make a rush decision here as you will only end up disappointed and will eventually have to spend more money.
