Got a 19 RGS about 3 weeks ago. Added chopped pak (advanblack) and first ride out, OL says “now we just need some speakers in the back for me”. I know many will say the lid speakers washout at speed, but I had some on my 13 RK (diy system, Memphis 300.4 amp and Phoenix gold 6x9s run off the iPhone via Bluetooth) By themselves and they were good up to highway speeds.
So, I think I want to do 6.5 w/ horns in the fairing and lid speakers. I’m leaning towards MMats 601.4 in the front, MMats 4ch amp, and then I’m stuck. Should I do 6x9 coax in the back? 8” MMats w/ horns? Also, will I need 2 amps? Any help is appreciated.
End goal is loud, clear music that I can hear at all speeds, understanding that lower frequencies eventually wash out with speed. Most listened to music is metal, rap, hard rock. Thanks!!
Post up what kinda budget you're working with. The mmats 601cx are great speakers, so you sound like you have some good ideas already.
budget would be 1000-2500. I run a booth at the fair and usually end up with a fair amount of fun money but I’m not looking for a competition system, so if I Can meet my needs for 1000, I’m good with it. But willing to spend more the first time if it means not redoing it this time next year.
I run the RF rear lid kit as it has good fit and finish to the lids. You can put just about any speaker in them and the mmats 690.4cx is about as good as it gets for volume and SQ from a 6x9. That RF lid kit angles the speakers towards the rider and can be heard at speed. The 4110 amp will power those enough to be heard also. If you go with 8" lids then you may be out of your budget and will need more power to be heard at speed. You will need a bt355 line leveler or 2 depending on if you want fade or not or have the hu flashed at a RF installer.

If I’m running coax 6x9 in the kids should I also run coax in the fairing or could I run a midrange and a horn? Speaking of horns, I’ve noticed MMats 6.5 is available in 4/8 ohm but their horns are only 8 ohms. Does the horn impedance need to match the driver impedance or will running a higher impedance on the horn effectively drop the Watts at the horn while maintaining a higher Wattage at the drivers?

To be honest those mmats 601cx are just about as good as it gets for SQ and volume. You would be hard pressed to tell the difference between them and mids with horns at speed. I personally have not heard the mmats 601's but others here have found them not near as good as the coax. Also keep in mind that a set of horns will need their own channel off an amp to tame them.
You have a good plan going so far. If I were in your shoes, I would just do the MMats PA601CX in the fairing and the MMats 6x9 in the lids. Amps are a bit more open. I run the MMats 4100 with 4 of the PA601CX and I am very happy with it (I am running a Sony head unit though) but if I were to do it again I would be tempted by the new Massive amp for about the same money but about double the power. This opens up possibilities for future "upgrades". Like TG said, these coax are good enough that you will more than likely not going to wish you went with the driver/horn setup and the extra complexity that goes along with it.
I'm running the stinger amp with 601cx in the fairing and 690 cx in the lids. Loud and clear sound with great SQ and pretty good bass. If FM reception is important to you, the stinger will keep that. Not sure about the mmats amp. Others can comment on the massive amp for fm as well.

The massive amp looks great on paper and fits a RG like a glove. Fm is the question.

FBJ, have u looked into leveraging technology a bit and utilize some of the various other awesome audio sources?
Just thinking that if ur investing a bunch of cash into audio upgrades then listening to antenna sourced FM its prob not $$$ well spent. Investing just a little time into uncovering a better source for ur listening desires could pay huge dividends.

Just trying to help brother. Lots of very cool audio sources available out there.
