Default CarPlay

Every dealership I’ve called or visited says they can no longer disable the mic and activate the whim to get Apple CarPlay. So what’s the cheapest headset/whim. I’m not interested in talking on the phone or texting while riding. But it’d be nice to use other apps like Pandora, Mapquest or google maps. Is it possible to get a headset/whim and just leave it in the bags, still be able to use the stereo and speakers for music etc?

You just need the whim module installed.......I think, as that is what i have and CarPlay works with or without a headset

I’ve heard that the 2020 (maybe 2019’s) just need the whim enabled through the dealership or whoever is doing the flash. But also heard you needed a Wireless microphone of some kind. Not sure which is right. Just know I can’t get it to work.

As long as you have the WHIM CarPlay should work, without a headset of course you will not be able to use the mic feature. Cheapest place to find a WHIM is either Surdyke or Utah Harley. Both $265 I believe. Easy install. Don't bother running the USB through the wire tunnel under the tank. wrap it up and leave it in the speaker opening.

You can install the WHIM yourself? I thought it needed a dealer flash.

We recently dealt with this from the dealer side, and I will say that while H-D claims, and it's likely true, that Apple requires an active microphone to enable CarPlay, disabling it through one of the updates without any forewarning about the impact to CarPlay functionality is a s%^t move by the factory. From what we've been told, an active, paired headset is required, not just an installed WHIM, but that could be wrong. We have had several complaints about this, and while we obviously have no pull at the dealer level, I have certainly discussed the manner in which this was done with several 'higher ups' at the MoCo.

Does it not work by connecting a "wired" mic anymore?
