GTS update with Soundz module
If you have an older Rushmore bike and a GTS head unit that has the old software (a version prior to making it backwards compatible), it can be done, but it’s a pain… got a buddy with a 2019 or newer bike? Take his outer fairing off unhook all the wires off his GTS, sit yours on top of his and plug all the wires into yours… turn the ignition on and update your software…. Then shut it off and hook all the wires and hook them back up to his and put yours back in your bike…. And then see if you have to take your bike to a dealer or an Indy and have it programmed/setup to your bike’s configuration (amp(s), speakers, Sirius, CB, Nav, etc).
But a dealer will probably just tell you it won’t work… they would have to pull the head unit out of a 2019 or newer bike, sit yours in the bike, power it up and do the software update… then put it back in your bike, put the other bikes head unit back in….
Using an old Soundz module is a lot easier….
There is one other possible way to do it, and I haven’t tried it myself, but I think you could do the same thing as using a Soundz module, only use a ECM out of a 2019 or newer bike, if you have access to one. Once the head unit is in your bike, swap out the ECM in your bike with one from a 2019 or newer bike, the turn the ignition on and do the software update…. Once the software is done updating, shut off the ignition and put your bike’s original ECM back in. I think this will work because in the fall of 2019 I put a GTS in my 2016 RGU using the Soundz module… this was before HD made the GTS backwards compatible, and to get the Soundz module to “trick” the head unit into thinking it was in a 2019 bike you had to put an 2019’s ECM in the bike during the initial programming/setup… then the GTS would work after you put the original ECM back in because the Soundz module cloned info it needed from the newer ECM to fool the GTS…. But I haven’t actually tried doing it that way instead of using the Soundz module, like Mikes300 was talking about. But I have done 3 using a Soundz module.
Either way, when you’re done you may still need a dealer or Indy to set the head unit up for your bike’s configuration.
