Default Notice the increase in power?

Good morning. I currently have a Soundigital 800.4 running 4 speakers. 2 in fairing and 2 in tourpack. Groundzero in fairing and Polks in tourpack. I have an opportunity to upgrade to the Soundigital 1200.4.

Question?

Did anyone already do this upgrade?

Did you notice the increase in power out on the highway at 70 mph?

800.4 = 132x4 at 4 ohms.
1200.4 = 198x4 at 4 ohms.
Aprreciate your feedback.

More power to speakers that are not rated for the increase, will not help you. More times than not, speakers will perform better in sound quality with a little less power than rated. More power risks over powering them and distortion.

This can change to a degree if you have the ability to fine tune them, via a dsp.

Good afternoon.

Assume for the purpose of this thread that both sets of speakers will handle the increase in power and no DSP will be used in the system.

Thanks.

I will tell you from personal experience, the GZ's will absolutely handle the power from the 1200.4 - but you'll have to up your freq to about 100-110 to soak up that 200w. The polks will take about 150w before they start to distort...and I had them crossed @ 100hz. You would definitely benefit going to the 1200.4, but you would benefit even more if you put a different speaker in the TP - like a Hertz SV or DD audio VO-MN

To answer your question: Yes, of course you notice an increase in power. The amp produces more power.

However, you are also taking a chance at reliability and you will have to listen to the annoying fan noise.

Can't hear the fan noise when the bike is running 😝.

But Shock is right, my 1200.4 failed after just two riding seasons...repaired for $225CAD and good as new...for now

OP as the others have said, it's easy to overpower speakers hoping to get them to sound better. I have run those GZs for years in my fairing (in two different bikes) and they sound very warm and clean with only 150 good watts going into them. I can run them at just 60Hz crossover which helps with the warmth of the sound because I am not overpowering them. I also have just 150 watts going to my Hertz Neos in the tour pak pods and can hear them fine and they sound good.

That being said I am using a DSP. I know you don't like the idea of a DSP but cheap speakers hooked to a cheap amp can be made to sound better than expensive speakers with an expensive amp just by applying a tune to them. The SD amps put out great power for their size but they can sound a little harsh at times. Again a tune will fix that. Since you were asking about lowers in another post if I were in your shoes I would add lowers before spending money increasing the wattage to your existing speakers. The whole system will sound better with that one addition. I seem to recall one of the smart folks mentioning a good six channel amp that would fit in the fairing. That might be just the ticket for you. Anyone remember what that was? Was it the JL 600/6?

Edit: I just realized the JL 600/6 is lower power than I thought. Was it an Mmats or a DB Audio amp that put out about 150 watts times six that fit in the fairing?

Hoyt is right on the other side of this coin. When my 1200.4 crapped out, I installed a Euphoria EX4 (provides less power than the 1200.4) to run my DD Audio VO-MN6.5 & AW6.5 off channel 1/2 into 2ohms, and my GZ yellow baskets off channel 3/4 down below, and much to my surprise, it sounds far cleaner than my 1200.4 did, and I can hear it just fine @ 75mph....I don't run a DSP.

Yes Hoyt, I believe it was the JL 600/6 - I remember reading posts from 2018ish where a guy was running that amp without a DSP to 8 total speakers and it sounded fantastic
