Default DYI Guys

For all the DYI guys, take a little time and watch this video.

Buy local, support small businesses, buy from known dealers, get recommendations on who to buy from. Cheapest isn’t the best.

I will have to agree 100%.

The video touches on both sides very well.

I know of quite a few shops that will not install customers' supplied parts just as a liability. If the shop does install the parts that were not purchased thru the establishment doing the work plan on paying higher labor fees and NO WARRANTY.

It is not just motorcycle shops. Wife and I own our own little business - Consulting, financial and non-profits.

I recall a lady calling me and asking me to do something. In order to respond, I had to completely research her needs, work with te state and IRS - then provided a very fair price. She said it was too much -and armed with the info I provided; she said she would do it herself. She did - and messed it up so came back to me. I had to again research, correct her errors and do it for her. The price went up - and she was disturbed - but this took me longer.

So this year she called back -said she needed it done. I provided her a price. She asked how long before the IRS dropped her, the rule is after the 2nd year. So, she said, well, lets wait and I will contact you next year and we can do both for the one time fee. I simply thanked here.

If she calls back, I will tack on a fee, in advance. Hard to answer questions and then they want to do it themselves.

One group has me do their taxes. They never complete their financials. I need those financial to do their taxes. So, at the end of the year, they give me their spreadsheet and bank statements. This forces me to input their information. In short, to make it right, I have ot reconcile their books every month. This way they get a free audit for the price of their taxes.

Last year, I said no, unless you pay me. They went somewhere else. Taxes cost was $1500 plus the audit.

So, I completely understand

Great example man.

I ran into this, this week actually. Having some car issues. Text a friend of mine who owns a small shop. He gives me a bunch of info. So instead of looking for a cheaper option (because he wasn’t offering me any kind of discount) and going to a shop that is way closer to my house, I brought it to him and paid full price. He’s a friend, small business and always answers my questions.

I see a lot of guys who will throw thousands and thousands on accessories and other things for their bike, but buy cheaper amps and speakers off Amazon and FleaBay, then have issues and come here asking for help.

If someone voluntarily offers up free advice to you and they can sell you equipment, go with that person and stop looking for the “best deal”. Best deals come at a price.

I have so much respect for Kevin Baxter and his willingness to help others in so many ways. The frustration in his voice is palpable and so unfortunate to hear. But a good message for many!

I refuse to help folks who will not buy a manual. If they are not willing to spend the money on what I feel are basics, then I will not aid then in their cheapness. Especially when most HD manuals can be found for sale on DVDs.
