Talking Android Auto

2019 FLHTK Ultra Limited - Messing around today and plugged my Android phone into the USB Jack under the "Secret Door". It hooked up and you can scroll all Apps on the phone on the GTS screen by the right hand joy stick or touch screen. Have to run a separate USB cable from behind faring thou since the phone fits perfectly in the "slot" but the USB cable won't let the door close. Bummer. Pretty Cool. Not sure if it is worth while but being able to use the "Waze" App might be kinda cool since you get more info Traffic Hazards Police as long as other users report them. The phone is charging while connected USB. Bluetooth connection only runs Media and not all the Apps. If anyone is interested I'll investigate further.

Welcome to this site - you will find some great guys here.

A lot of us have been doing that for years - so, we might offer some suggestions.

I have an ultra so, there is a trunk. I had a USB cable run from the cubby to the trunk. This way, I can attach my phone to the trunk cable - it stays charged plus, I have AA.

Next, after I did this, they started to come out with the AA and carplay wireless adapters. All you have to do is plug the adapter into the cubby USB port and it connects to your phone. The adapter fits in the cubby - and you can keep the phone in your pocket, trunk or wherever.

The final thing I did was to use a USB splitter. This way, I can not only connect my adapter, but I can still plug in my flash drive for my music.

For me, the best thing is having the cable in the trunk. Makes it easier to plug in things to my splitter. Let me, or others know if we can help.

Again, welcome

Default Thinking through Functionality

Thanks for the suggestions. Started looking for the Dongle on Amazon (and then saw another post). The only other question I see being raised is with our Cardo wireless headsets. They connect via the phone. If I am thinking this through correctly, with the AA Dongle I can see phone Apps on GTS screen, scroll and activate what is needed. Talk with wife or listen to music from phone. Going the other way, from the GTS to say the headset for radio or WB probably won't work. Then perhaps this would be needed J&M adapter part no. - JBLU-DNG51-14HD maybe it would provide full functionality both ways, AA, Cardo comms, from bike GTS access to Cardo headset for radio and WB.

I think you are referring to my other post about the dongle.

For clarity - we are talking about two different things. One is the AA wireless adapter - there are several of those out there. Since you have an android phone, make sure your wireless adapter is for AA and not for carplay.

The next item that is described is the J&M Dongle. This allows you to connect your "wireless headsets" to your boom box. Think of it this way - instead of paying $399 for the Harley WHIM and then paying about $525 for the Harley headset to connect to the WHIM, you could pay $120 and connect to your current headsets. Just remember, the dongle has no voice connectivity. Still, you can talk to your passengers and others that have wireless communications.

This is why I use the dongle for local trips with the wireless headsets and use the wired headsets on overnight trips so I can use the CB.

Talking Full Functionality

Your right,I was reading your thread about the J&M Dongle. I searched for Android Auto thread but nothing came back so started this one. Perhaps we should combine these two together I am thinking the J&M is the way to go for full functionality (connecting to GTS and AA). I read the install instructions, checked Bluetooth compatibility and watched the video. They have their own wireless headset too. Then a guy wonders if their headset would allow you to transmit on the CB? Probably not because you have to push a button to transmit don't you? Haven't used a CB since the 70's Why do you use a CB? Chatter? or to see why the traffic is all jammed up?

It is still a very reliable way to communicate between riders in a group. The bluetooth mesh system doesn't always work as advertised. Some guys I ride with occasionally tried the bluetooth headsets and they cut out so often they finally gave up on them.

For me - I ride with our HOB Chapter. The leader and tail usually use the CB. The rest of us just sort of listen to them.

On long trips when just my wife and me, I listen to the traffic and things like that. I have been using a CB for a number of years. In the past, they were included when you purchased an Ultra. When I got my 2021, a CB wasn't installed, and I wondered if I would indeed add it. I did - since I lead some rides now. Plus, wireless was not that big of a deal.

Today - I would save the $1000 since I really don't use it as much. Probably why Harley is moving away from it.

I think Harley is like most companies these days, they just left it out to save money. I think the reason folks are "moving away from it" is because they made it so expensive to obtain. In my opinion bluetooth is still an NFC (near-field communications) technology and just isn't suited for communicating reliably over any real distances.

Ask someone under the age of 40 what a CB radio is. You'll get a blank stare back at you. Everyone who rides motorcycles that I know use the Sena, Cardo, or some sort of Bluetooth device. In the off-road world, everyone got away from CB and went to the VHF Business Band or GMRS mobile two-way radios. These from my reading do better in hilly terrain where you don't have line of sight. I have yet to use any Mesh comms, but when my friend and I went to NC we used the older Senas. They worked well as long as you didn't get too far apart. Not ideal, for everyone. I'm surprised they aren't doing more with Wi-Fi bands or some other short range radio frequencies.

It's not exactly integrated into the GTS system but Maxon seems to make a bluetooth headset that pipes into an FRS radio. That might be somewhat of a modern compromise.
