I have a 2001 Ultra Classic. Last year I was getting this cracking/popping sound from the speakers (sounded like static you get on AM radio). I would get this when listening to radio, cassette, and MP3 player. I replaced the front stock speakers with Hogtunes last summer and the noise went away.
Took the bike out this spring and now the noise is back. I have to turn the radio almost all the way up in order to hear it.
Update:
Took the bike out today and had the volume set at halfway and I didn't seem to get any of the popping noises.
At this point, the internal amp of that radio is 11 years old. If it's popping at higher volumes, it's probably starting to break down.
Your best bet, however, would be to contact Radio Sound www.radiosound.com
It's their radio and they might have a bit more insight to what may be happening and what should be done.
