adding satellite radio
i have the standard radio that comes on a '12 e.g. classic. what is involved in adding satellite radio reception to the radio? is it just a matter of calling the satellite provider, or do you have to install special antenna and receiver?
there are too many times i find myself out in the boon docks with no radio reception and i am getting tired of listening to all the commercials too.
what kind of rate should i expect to pay for basic service? many thanks.

if you want to got the HD route, it won't be cheap. you'll need HD part # 76404-06 @$499 and I'm pretty sure you'll need the overlay harness but not 100% positive. After you get this installed then you call Sirius to activate it.
Another alternative is adding a handlebar mount satellite radio and plug it into your aux port on the front of your radio. A lot of places give away the radio to get your business on the monthly siriusxm service. You'll need a mount for your handlebars to hold the device as well to go this route.

I went the HD route with mine. I first installed it in my 07 RG. I did get the unit/module here in the For Sale section at a respectable discount. The module mounts on top of the stock HK and comes with an antenna which can be mounted to the radio bracket. I did have to purchase the "Ultra overlay" harness to complete the install. The overlay harness has ALL the connections for the extras that come with the Ultra models. I took all the extra wiring out and only left what was needed to use the XM module (thank you service manual). After the install, just a phone call to Sirius/XM with the module ID # and activated it. I went this way to keep it as clean as possible, maintain handle bar controls and so I wouldn't have something mounted on the handle bars that I would have to worry about when I was not with the bike. I now have the same set up on my 2012.

I'm not up on the wiring requirements of the current satellite radios, but for mounting, check out these simple but classic looking mounts (made in USA): http://www.leadermotorcycle.com/satellite-radio-mounts/
