Thanks Ultra,
Finished the install today. Printed out a copy of your step by step instructions and everything went smooth. Huge difference over the stock system. Ran the rear speaker wires as you suggested and tested them with the speakers I took out of the fairing. Works good. I bought the rear pods that you and some others suggested from Junes Upholstery. Should be here in a few days then I'll tackle that project.
Thanks again for the help. No way I could have done this without it!
I've been watching a couple different threads in here about the Polk mm651 speakers. I tried them both in the fairing and rear pods. Sitting still in the garage or parking lot, they sounded GREAT. But out on the highway they distorted out and sounded terrible. As soon as you came to a stop, they sounded good again. I went and removed them and installed Hogtunes 5x7 in the fairing with 5.25 in the pods. Sounds good. Was I doing something wrong or not doing something correctly to get the proper sound ?

The bike is a '99 Roadglide. No amp installed, running off stock HU. Did not use crossovers. Did I go about this all the wrong way ?
The reason that I asked about the year of your bike is that different years used different impedance factory radios & speakers.
I'm not 100% sure, but your factory unit & speakers are probably 8 ohm impedance. (Check to see if it's marked on the speakers you removed)
The Polk MM651's are 2.7 ohms and only need to be used with a 2 ohm system, otherwise the speakers may be damaged.
The cross-overs are needed to send the proper frequencies to the woofer (6 1/2" part of the speaker) and to the tweeter (center part of speaker assembly). Without them, the speakers will not operate as designed.
Oh okay thanks. I screwed up all way around. Thank you very much. I'll have to look at this again and be more careful instead of jumping in with both feet in the air.
My rear speakers pods arrived from June's Upholstery. Excellent quality and are going to look great on the bike, but I am a bit surprised to see that they did not come with any kind of installation template though. Looks pretty straight forward but just wanted to see if anyone had any tips before I began putting the holes in the tour pak.......
I used June when I added pods to a used Ultra TP that came w/o the pods. June's pods matche the Ultra's per-drilled holes
June must have a template he can send to you.
I'd also suggest using HD' s bass boost port kit--it works and, like using polyfil it won't wow you but it does make a noticeable difference--the MIT also comes with a template matching the Pod hole locations.
Tour Pak Pods and speakers installed. System really sounds better than expected. Highly recommend Ultra's design for anyone wanting a solid system without the huge expense. The Polk's sound great and that SS amp is sweet! Happy with the pods from June's Upholstery too. Very good quality. Thanks again Ultra and all the rest who chimed in.
