Default sony head unit cutting out

i installed a sony head unit with the hawg wired kit last march and the radio started cutting out on me in november. im trying to pinpoint the problem and its driving me crazy. i use a usb mainly so i figured that there was an issue with that when i would hit a bump so i tried to see if that was the issue. with the bike at a standstill, i turn the bars and it will still cut out. ive checked all my connections and they seem tight. could there be an issue with the head unit? where else should i look or what should i try? thanks in advance for the help!

do you have anything else in the system such as an amp or is it just the radio and speakers?

Also, 2005 - 2008 batwing models are notorious for the stock wiring harness to rub through on the vertical fairing bracket. Pull your fairing cap off and check that very closely.

i think i found the issue playing around with it the other day. it seems as though the unused wires in the top of the harness would rattle or pull and would cause the head unit to power down momentarily. almost like there is a loss of contact between the wire and the harness. i zip tied the wires, which will hopefully secure them and eliminate the problem.

The problem is back with a vengeance. I tried to use a wire tie and hold all of the unused wires together, but it's not working. I pinpointed it to the harness going into the head unit. if i jiggle the unused wires the radio cuts out. i don't want to cut them short since i hope to add an amp in the future. right now i have wire nuts on them, so i was thinking of taking those off and using liquid electrical tape.

Is there anything I can do to keep the wires held firmly in the harness?

Unless one of those unused wires is bare or shorting out at some place it is highly doubtful that they are the problem. Make sure all the strands of those wires are covered by the wire nuts or taped up good. Sometimes a stray strand can get loose . I always cut unused wires off and then tape to prevent shorting. Use real good tape not the cheap crap. Look real carefully at all the wires coming out of the connector with magnification. Those strands are really fine. Double and even triple check that all the wires are properly spliced. If you used crimped buttsplicers check to make sure they are tight. There is always a cause for the symptoms you are stating.

I hear ya. im going to go over everything with a fine tooth comb. The issue I have is that it's a plug and play system from Hawg Wired. I didn't splice anything and there shouldn't be any exposed wires at all. I'm not blowing any fuses, the system will just cut off for a couple seconds and come back on. Kind of like how an old portable CD player used to if it got hit. That's where I thought the original issue was, but I can duplicate the problem when the bike is at a standstill in my garage. The only thing i did was shorten the unused wires and put a wire nut on each one. The wire nuts are tight. I'm thinking the weight or size of them could be an issue, as crazy as that sounds. I also think an issue is that the wires are not tight enough inside the harness and they "rattle", if that makes any sense.

Been many a years since I've seen a bad radio harness especially from Sony so I'm inclined to believe what was already stated in that you've got a wire that's rubbing/shorting somewhere

But to answer your question, simply unplug the harness, get some clear RTV silicone and cut the tip of the tube very small. Hold the wires in place where they need to be and feed the silicone into the back of the harness to fill up the wire cavitys and let it set up til it dries.

I have the dsx-s100 and it is doing the same thing. I got mine narrowed down to the faceplate. I have it in an aftermarket fairing. Used a buddies faceplate and it did not do it. I like the iPod tray but this is the second one I have had this issue with so I think I am moving on to another unit, not sure what yet though. For now double sided tape to hold faceplate tight. Seems to be common issue for the dsx units.

hmm.. 2+ years and not a problem one with the 310btx

All my findings point to the DSX-S100 having the issue you're referring to... But in reality that's to be expected from a Gen1 product....

Same problem here...I think I traced it to the hawg wired controller, where the wires go into the block.
