Default PBR300x2 Mounting on Ultra

I am contemplating upgrading the speakers on the ultra. I am considering the MM651 speakers front and rear. I'm on the fence about simply doing the speakers alone. If I go the amplifier route then I would go with two PBR300x2 amps. I would go with Scotts bracket for the install. I have not been able to get a definitive answer on whether it is possible to mount two amps side by side on the bracket. I've been told that it's been done but havent found any posts or pictures actually confirming that it's possible.

My other option is the DB series speakers and the PBR300x4. I'm well aware of the issues with that amp and Ultranutz dislike for it. I am hesitant to go this route.
Anyone just upgrade to the MM651"s and stop there?

UltraNutz is the real expert on this, so I am sure he will chime in. No doubt he has already tried it. He posted a while back that they won't both fit in the fairing.

I'm doing this upgrade this weekend on my Ultra, so will be glad to let you know. Using Scott's bracket, pbr300x2, polk mm651, dragonfly 6.5 adapters and polyfil to pack the speakers in the fairing, and just installing the mm651's in the tourpak pods with no amplification.
Should be able to get a good idea as to whether you can squeeze another pbr in next to the first one in, but am not hopeful and pretty much resigned to taking up some tour pak space if I choose to add that
.
Considered the 300x4 just like you and opted out for same reasons.
I may even just leave the rears without the amp depending on how the front sounds when I am done. Don't have a passenger often, and am thinking that the amplified fairing and the 651's in the front and rear will be enough to suit my tastes. I can still always add that second amp later, or swap out completely with the Soundstream if anyone ever figures out the FM issues. I know several people have said they don't have an issue, but I like my FM and don't want to risk losing it... If you don't care about FM, the SS 4.520 with the polks in all 4 holes is the way to go IMO.

Thanks for the reply. I listen to FM almost exclusively so I don't even want to try the sounstream amp. I'll wait and see how your install goes. I'm curious to see how the MM651's sound in the rear pods compared to the stock speakers.

I installed two PBR300.4 amps side by side atop the HK head unit using one of Scott's bracket to relocate the CB and iPod modules under the head unit. You will need to cut the speedo and tach cups used to mount those gauges as done with installing J&M' s 4-channel amp--I only reference the latter amp to confirm you aren't compromising your rise if you remove material from the plastic cups. Using a Sharpie to outline the places for removal with.both amps is helpful.

Also, use a flexible 10ga.wire for power and ground, e.g. Monster cable They will be at the rear of the amps and close to the speedo and tach and routed along the inner fairing.

When I undertook this project of mounting two PBR amps side by side to drive 8 woofers, my collaborator and lead guy was TIF2 on cvoharley.com. If you need pics, go there register for free, then search the electronics forum or PM him. If you don't care enough to join, you aren't serious so why respond to you?

The last question is why I did not document this project with the PBR 300.4. It takes me a lot of time to type, upload photos, and etc. for a "how to" post and I concluded that the number of folks who would benefit would be extremely small, so not worth the effort.

I also have an Ultra and did just the MM651 upgrade over the past week. I did notice considerable sound quality improvements over my previous HogTunes speakers. I too am contemplating going with an amp and have ordered Scotts bracket but I am testing the water so to speak hoping that the FM loss iisue on the SS amp will be resolved. As far as volume you can get plenty out of the stock HU and the MM speakers alone. I was looking for more of a me pleaser than a crowd pleaser and so far I am fine with what I have.

Hope this helps.

If you're unsure I highly suggest going the speaker route first. This may be simply all it takes to make you happy as none of us know what your listening pleasures are.

Change the speakers first, then if you think you need an amp you can add on then.

2 PBR300x2 amps will fit in the fairing. Others have done it, I personally have not. Hit up Harleypingman on here. He's running 2 of the PBR300x4 amps inside the fairing cap.

Wrap those fairing speakers in polyfil and line the rear pods with polyfil. You'll also need a set of 6.5" adapter rings for the fairing speakers. Dragonfly Cycle Concepts has those available to forum members for 10% off.

Carl,
You still using your PBR300.4's with good success? I just ask because I took a chance on one for when I do the lids. I was gonna wait for the Kenwood review but just went ahead with the RF.... Jeff

No problems with the PBR300x4. TIF2 and others use it as well.

Personally, I suspect the heat issue was an early production problem since fixed and any recent issues are from using the amp to drive lower impedance speakers.

Just finished installing the MM651's in my rear tour pak pods tonight. Wifey made me quit because I was making too much noise, so will have to continue tomorrow. Unable to tell whether there is appreciable difference since I still have the stock in the fairing and haven't been on the road with it. I did take some video with my iPhone before I removed the stocks in the rear, and again after I installed the 651's, with volume set the same. Wish I had some more technical way to measure, but will tell you that at the same volume, my rears were much more clear than the fronts. I did pack the pods with Polyfil.

My buddy was picking up his new Road Glide today...and of course I just had to get out and help him initiate his break in period , so fun interrupted my audio mod.

Will break into the fairing tomorrow, installing Scott's bracket and the pbr 300x2 with the 651's, dragonfly adapter and of course...polyfil. Plan to hook up just the speaker for fun and do another video to see how they sound without the amp, then hook up the amp.

Fun, Fun, Fun.
