I thought the SS PN4.540D amp was rated at 100w/ch at 4ohms ? My spanking new RF PBR300x4 has birth cert of 87w/channel at 4ohms. True that initial offerings of the RF had overheat issues but that seems to be a thing of the past. The SS amps are generally about 75% likely to have FM issues and many still enjoy listening to free, local radio...

I heard they were overpriced crap and after hearing them alongside other amps I am inclined to think so too.

130x4 @ 2 ohms which is what the way J&M/ARC amp is specd at 125x4 @ 2ohms.

100x4 @ 4 ohms on the SS 520D

And you're right about the FM, but what irritates me is the consensus that it's SS amps.. IT'S NOT! It's Class D amps.. Ask Biketronics.. same issue with the 2180, ask JL Audio, same issue with XD400x4, and the list goes on and on.

I have no reason or basis for this opinion but the polk speaker meltdown seems to be strictly with the mm651's. After my experience I believe it is the magnet that they are using in this particular speaker. It isn't the typical heavy, big, metal magnet that comes on every other speaker. It is this small, plastic thing, with who knows what inside, that gets red hot after going south. IMO if I had the standard big magnet db651's I'd still be listening to tunes on my bike instead of having the faring torn apart waiting on warranty speakers.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's an issue with the tweeter stand not being strong enough (hence the speaker grille having the tweeter hole/holder) allowing the wiring to possibly short or cause the heat build?

I believe the tweeter stand or pod or stalk or whatever becoming loose or shifting or leaning is all a byproduct of the heat produced when the electronic magnet lets loose. Something in there then starts to melt.

I still think it's just a bad batch of speakers, wrong/cheaper glue or not enough glue. The speakers in my 09 were in there for 2+ years and believe me they got cranked on.. and the 12 FLH, they've been in there since September. I pulled them out the other day just to look at them and they're perfectly straight...

I'd like to think that any sales person would eventually acquiesce to the customer's request for detail... maybe only when sales are down sufficiently to improve the product and release true detail to compare against the competition!
