Default Class D Amps

My understanding is that a class D amp work basically like a switching power supply. That said, I have been using switching power supplies for my ham radio use for years. The cheap ones are not designed well and use cheaper components. They cause noise. I am now using switching power supplies that cost $400 vs. $100 and there is no noise.

The advantage to the class D amps is they don't generate as much heat. When I was looking at amps I taked with the Hawg Wired guys. Their amps are all class D design and cost more that the RF amp I used. They claim they have an efficent design and better F.E.T.'s in their amps and they don't cause interference to FM radios.

They also make their amp here in America. I am thinking about trying one just to see what it will do. Mike, one of the owners, said if I bought it directly from him and it didn't work as I expected he would give a full refund.

Has anyone had any experience with their amps that can verify their operation?

look around on here in the touring and audio sections.. there are several posts about HW amps causing interference as well. Mike is a great guy and certainly a stand up guy so he says what he means.

With that said, I will tell you that FM interference is going to be hit or miss regardless of manufacturer. My FM works perfectly fine with the SS amp sitting right on top of the Sony head unit yet others have issues with the same setup.

I did some searches and didn't find anything. I'll try again. What I do like is that you can mount them on top of the CB and XM units.

I am not doubting you but I just can't find anything about the HW causing noise. I see a few people that don't like the sound of their cheapy PNP system.

Can you point me to the post or help me figure out what to search on? If it's problematic I probably don't want to mess with it. The RF amp I have works but I didn't like moving my CB and XM to the bottom of the radio. It appear the HW fits in the fairing without even moving all the original wiring around. The RF also puts off tons of heat. Not a big deal if it hold's up. The way the HW installs is what peaked my interest.

Thanks.

Great. I may just have to try one. I also understand that a class D amp won't distort as quickly either. In other words you can turn it up louder without distortion.

I downloaded their manual and was really impressed with the job they did on the manual. Now I just have to come up with the money to buy one. That always seems to be a problem.

- draws less current
- capable of more power in less space. however keep in mind nothing will beat a good class A amp.. they're just big and power hogs
- less heat

only drawback is FM

Good points. Like I said Mike says theirs don't cause noise because they are designed properly with better compontents. This is his claims.

I would still like to hear from somebody that has used one before I order. I am specifcally looking at their CS300.

Anybody used one??

I am sorry, but I do not agree with that generality on class D amps ,,,,,,

the FIRST class D amps that J&M has ever offered are our performance series ((see http://www.jmcorp.com/SeeProducts.asp?PF=43 ,,,,,,,))) and we have tested them fairly extensively for RF emissions to the FM stereo and have not found any interference ,,,,,

now I am not quite the expert that certain people are here on this board are ,,,, but it is what it is ,,,,,, I ride a lot, I test our new products 4+ days per week and have been for 40+ years ,,,,,
