Default CD Skip...could be the handlebar bracket boltheads

While I had my HK removed and on its way to Iron Cross for some mods, I decided it was a good time to change-out the front handle bar clamp bolts per Service Bulletin M1289. The bolt heads have been known to contact the bottom of the HK and cause CD skip and other issues. The affected bikes are 2006 - 2011(if manufactured before Oct 2010). Here is a link to the service bulletin:

The replacement bolts were a little over 2 bucks at the HD shop. I took some before and after pictures, as well as pictures of the old bolt compared to the newer short-headed fastener.

First, here is a shot of the old bolt on the left and the new one on the right:

Here is a shot of the head configuration. The old bolt has an Allen head and the new one has a Torx head:

Here is a before shot with the old bolts still installed. Sorry for the focus issue:

And here are the newer bolts installed:

When I removed the HK, it appeared that the left stock bolt (as viewed in the photo) was making a little contact with the bottom of the unit. I wasn't experiencing any problems, but figured while the radio was out anyway, this was the perfect time to change out the bolts to avoid any issues down the road. I also re-torqued the stem nut since removing the HK made it perfectly available.

NOTE: Remove and install one bolt at a time. Do not remove both front bolts at once, or you risk the possibility of unexpected handlebar movement.

I notice some slight rubbing on bottom of the factory HD HU when I pulled it out to replace it. I got some of the shorter head bolts but aftermarket HU had plenty clearance so didn't install them. I have no doubt these have caused a lot of HD HU issues.

Seems like they cause trouble on some bikes and on others not so much. They guys at Iron Cross said they see a fair share of issues seemingly caused by the radio being bumped by those tall bolt heads.

Like I said, I hadn't experienced any issues, but it would have been foolish not to change-out the bolts while the radio was out...so I did.
