Default CV carb part - 2003 XLH883

So i just picked up a sporty that would only run with the choke on. Took it home and pulled the carb to clean everything out since the previous owner said itd been sitting and he tried to clean the carb with no luck.

The carb appears to have been modified from original. This is whats in it.

Needle - NOKK 3 shims
Main - 140
Pilot - 42

Disasembled everything and was putting back together when i noticed this little brass fitting. Cant figure out where it belongs. Additionally, any other set up advice???

Was the diaphram cover off?
Carb may need to soak in a carb cleaner tank overnight.
Welch plug that masks the air/idle circuit should be removed, and then set it at 2/12 turns out for starters.

Thanks Scott,

Good idea to soak it. The accelerator pump orifices may be clogged. Im gonna do a full rebuild while i have it off. Mainly replace the vacuum slide w /diaphram and accelerator pump diaphram. The carb has been played with in the past. The fuel inlet was replaced with a brass one and air mixture screw plug was removed.

Right now the bike has a K&N oval filter and some aftermarket pipes. Is the current set up a good starting point??

What im really after is where that little piece of brass is missing from?

Looks like the brass fitting that goes under one of the four diaphragm cover screws. Part# 27263-96 collar

Exactly why I asked about the diaphram in my question.

Plus double check that the needle jet is installed the right way around....it's the brass bit that extends into the carb throat from the float side. If you get it in upside down then the bike will barely run....if at all.

Yea that little piece threw me off as well.

Got it all rebuilt with a new slide and diaphram, new accelerator pump diaphram, gaskets, springs, needle, jets, float needle, spark plugs. She runs now. I have no idea why there was a 140 main, idle screw turned way in and three shims on the needle. Maybe thats why the spark plugs were charcoal toast

I went with all new 170 main, 42 pilot and needle alone. Havnt took her for a spin yet but she starts up sounds good so far.
