I apologize if this has already been covered. As the title states, I am considering upgrading from SE II Slipons to a D&D Fatcat or V&H Propipe on a 2003 Fatboy. Will it likely be necessary to re-jet? Also is a dyno something that a carb'd bike needs or can benefit from? TIA
More than likely you will need to do some minor jetting to compensate for the higher flow exhaust. A dyno tune will always yield better tuning results, but riding the bike and making changes based on throttle response/plug color will get you close. It also depends if you have a dynojet kit or similar product to make these changes.
To be quite truthful, the gain vs the dollar spent on a 2/1 over the slip-ons, will not justify the extremely minimal increase, if any.
Money MUCH better spent on a cam swap/big bore kit/etc. if looking for more power.
20 years of factual findings from dyno tuning speaking here, not an opinion, and not a google search either.

Right on Scott, for lbs to dollar the best upgrade would be a cam. nothing wrong with 2-2's with the right cam, the lbs (or should I say torque ) would be a large measurable increase and actually cheaper than a lot of 2-1 pipes...
Yes, I am.
Also assuming that the engine is still 88".
And if so, the 2/1 over the slip-on, wouldn't yeild the dollar spent/hp gained increase that would make myself feel warm and fuzzy if it were my machine.
Trust me, I'd love to sell the op a pipe, but hate to see folks spend w/o good gains, that's all.

Here is the actual difference from 2-2's to 2-1's. The calculations you see on the one dyno sheet is because the Python one was SAE and the LSR one was actual so I made the correction... so both are actual numbers... A cam and rejet will yield more gain than the pipes will...
Thanks for the input guys. I got a great deal on a propipe from another HDF member, $174 shipped to me. )) It seems that re-jetting is not necessary yet, but SE Heavy Breather is in the works for next month, then cams. Unfortunately, cams may have to wait until the end of the year or possibly next year. I love the new sound and look of this new pipe, it was definitely worth the small price it costed me.
