Ok, this is new to me. My husband bought a 1994 Sportster 883. It had been sitting for 4 yrs. He has changed out all the fluids, bought new battery, air filter, lights, ect. He started it yesterday for the first time, it started right up, but was leaking gas. He turned it off and found it was pouring out of the carb. So, he then went and rebuilt the carb. Now it tries to turn over but wont. Any suggestions?? He doesnt know I joined to see if I could help, but he is really frustrated.
It is possible the starting problem is a new one, not related to the carb. When you say it tries to turn over, does it make any noises, like a click? In any event it sounds as if the battery is down on power. If you have a multimeter between you, check what the voltage is between the battery terminals, then attempt to start it and see what the voltage changes to.
If you go to the 'Electrical' part of this DIY section you will find two sticky posts about the charging system, which will help you. Your battery may be down on power, either because it is old or under-charged and those posts will help you identify the problem. Hopefully then you will have a strong battery that will start your bike like a good'un!
