Default I got a question about el and fl

I'm just wondering for example a 51 el panhead would look identical to a 51 fl panhead... So I'm just wondering if there's and appearance differences between el and fl

I was just trying to say that is the ONLY way I know of to visually tell the difference. I believe identical otherwise except for displacement.

I was mainly wondering if the cylinders were longer for the larger stroke

Default EL vs FL

The EL's (if orig ) have a shorter stroke than the FL's Yes the cylinders for an EL are shorter You can use FL cylinders on a stock stroke EL only the pistons(stock) do not quite make it to the top of the FL cylinders making for low/low compression My knuck came with a 61 CI bottom end( EL) 74 CI (FL) cylinders ran good and I could kick start it with my arm ! (early 70's ) I'm paying for that mistake now I stroked that knuck in the 90's S&S 4 1/4 wheels What a power difference that made Sold the knuck in 2015 SAD DAY oh well

Basically comes down to engine displacement, but as mentioned there are some internal differences as well as some external (shorter cylinders, different sized intake manifolds)....but unless you measure it is difficult to tell. Biggest giveaway is the VIN#.
