Default Confused on Year...

Hello All,

Well, I was given a 1957 (or so we think) Sportster from my Father. He has owned this bike since the mid to late 70's. Ever since he owned it, the title has read 1957 Sportster XLCH. However the more I research the bike, the less I think it is a 57. Its not completely origional anymore, unfortunately. It has had some work done here, and there.

Heresa couple things I do know.
883 Engine
Kickstart Only
Magneto can has a key installed for theft prevention.
Front and Rear Drum Brakes.
Shifter is located on the right side in front of the Kickstart petal.
Being a kickstart only, it has a Generator, and no battery.

I can post pics once I get them on this work computer. Or I can email you the pics if you would like. I took several pictures of the bike to include ALL casting numbers that I could see. (Frame, Engine, Cylinders, and more). Please help me on this. I want to know exactly what I have so I know what to restore it to.

Thanks for all your time.
Anthony

Oh, and if I dont get back to you in a timely manner... Give me a few days. I am in Iraq, and cannot be onlilne daily to check stuff out.

Based on your limited description, it could be a 1957 - which was the first year for Sportsters.

XLCH meant magneto only.

On the left side engine crank case the r will be a VIN pad with number. The first two digits represent the year. Example 57XLCH1234 the year would be a 1957. Good luck and enjoy.
