Need an air cleaner assembly - complete
I've looked through JP and DK but I'm having some issues with the thin foam strip that is supposed to be the filter element and simple fact that I can't get a good description or real information from a phone call. They pull up the same catalog page I'm looking and and read off the same description I'm reading. The little 5 1/2" "Dragton style" doesn't instill a lot of confidence. Dust is a major concern around here. I'd like to find a bigger assembly with a real paper element and/or foam element.
I hit the local dealer and they were very nice when I mentioned the year, which was before the counter guy was born, and politely indicated they probably couldn't help me anymore than looking in the Drag Specialities catalog (at the same pictures and descriptions). I hit a used cycle parts place in town and they even called a second with no luck.
I've looked on Ebay and have found several used units for other models that might work but I don't know if all the holes in the backing plate will match.
Between the age and the fact that nobody seems to know any cross references, I am running into a wall.
What is the real difference between a backing plate for a Bendix/Tilloston/Keihin, S&S, CV, etc.? Some of them look identical (from the pictures posted). If it is a matter of having an extra port for fuel injection or something, I can figure out a way to plug that off. What will fit? What are my options?
I really don't want to go back to the stock ham can and I refuse to pay to upgrade my carb. (at least at this time). I like the look of the oval cleaners (sportsters?). The ones with the straight sides, not the ones that are more egg-shaped.
There is a 7" assembly that looks like a school bell that is advertised to fit. Anyone know what kind of element it uses? Nobody else does. I would rather not use this style if I can help it. I see (and hear) plenty of school bells at work, and would rather not be reminded of them on my bike. I don't mind a round cover, just not the dome-shaped one with the screw in the middle. I may have to go this way.
I'll even entertain discussing the old assembly you have in that box in the back of the garage, if it will fit a stock '80 shovelhead Keihin carb.
