Most estimates are in range. "Worth" is the balance between what someone is willing to pay vs. what someone is willing to part with it for. As anything else that has some age to it, what condition are most of the components in? Look past the paint, and assuming the engine runs strong, how's the paint on the frame? Lift up the bobs if you can and see the color of the insulation on the wires. From experience with shovels, excessive impedence from oxidized copper can be a frustrating mess. 74 inch motors gave off a lot of heat, budget a new battery once a year if ridden in slow, summer traffic.

ORIGINAL: sleepneagle

about 4500 to 5000 depending on condition of frame, tins, engine. Less if it has an aftermarket engine i.e. Revtec
I would say up to around $10K depending on condition, how stock it is and what options it has.
A stock full dressor bike in really good condition should bring at least $8k.

I looked at a lot of shovels before I bought mine. The biggest problem I found was finding one with a title that matched the VIN on the bike, and that had a Harley and not a home built title.

Ref the points, I replaced mine when I got it and haven't had a problem. Rode the bike all summer. I am currently looking at a 73 shovel to add to the fleet but it's not as original as my 76.

Prices around here run about $4500. to $8000. for a running bike with a good title.

I have points in my 79 FLH and I love'em. Have you ever tried to fix an electronic ignition on the side of the road? It can't be done!
ORIGINAL: dhutchison

If it has the old points style ignition, that will be a problem. My old 76 had the Crane HI-4 put in it, and no more problems. There are many other issues that were just "nature of the beast" for the ole shovelheads. Depending on what the bike is, I'd say you are looking in a range of 5-8 grand. Could be more, could be less. If you PM me with more detailed info, I can better tell you. I deal in a lot of bikes and try to stay up on the market.

I'd say it's worth what ever you are willing to pay for it. Irecently bought my 89 Softail for $6500. It's worth $4500. on a trade value, and worth $9000.in my opinion, if I were too re-sell it.
I buffed out all the aluminum, painted it, had it fine tuned at a shop, added some fender trims and tank badges, horn and blinkersand now people think it's new.

Something is only worth what someone else will give you. So it's basically up to you to decide. If it's the year & model of bike you want & condition is good it should be worth IMO, up to $8k. I have a friend selling a very "sweet looking" 80 FLH butneeds just a bit of top end work that will be selling for this amount.

If YOU like it and are staisfied with it and plan to keep it for awhile-BUY IT. Negotiate the best buy you can get and buy it! Goodluck.
