Default RE: title for customs

When i bought my bike and tried to insure it, it was an absolute nightmare. Companys like progressive and geico who specialize in bikes would not even touch it. The bike has a title, an appraisal and all the paperwork from the builder but noone wanted to insure it. There are companys out there that specialize in custom stuff that is hard to place a value on but there was no way i was going to pay the money that they wanted for motorcycle insurance! I know that in minnesota it is pretty simple to get a title for a custom. However, mine was first registered in iowa for the simple reason that they ascually will stamp a vin into the frame under the seat for you!

Hope this helps a little. I would definatly check with your insurance man. I finally went to American Family insurance.

I can speak to Virginia. I'm just finishing a custom bagger. The title is going to require receipts, MSO from motor, trans, frame, photo, notorized statment from the builder (me), about $400, and all has to MAILED to Richmond.

Only full coverage insurance I've found is throug Foremost. It is expensive, I have a decent driving record, own two other bikes, and have 35 years of riding experience. To insure for 35K, $1900 a year. but... first you to submit photos and an independent appraisal from a shop.

The best thing to do is call your local DOT and ask for a package that will include all you need to get the custom registered and titled. It is not a big deal at least not in my state.
