Have you considered switching your riding pants to velvet? Lol
The clear 3M film is a great idea. Also could get the entire tank sides wrapped in clear. I'm trying not to look as I know mine is getting scratched a bit
Difficult to contact the tank with mid controls, especially if you have long legs. As mentioned a good coat of wax will help. Get some swirl remover, then wax.
If the tank has, indeed, been ceramic coated and is fading, then you need to completely clean the tank. Then use a clay bar to remove the ceramic coating. You don't need to strip the entire tank,, just make sure to feather it really well. Then wipe the whole tank down with and isopropyl alcohol cleaner to remove all contamination.
Use a really good ceramic coating like Armor Shield IX. This, IMHO, is the best.
After that, clear vinyl protectors as reference above.
i'll be honest, I never knew that was a thing, but it is, use less lube and you can work a ceramic coating off with a clay bar
Ive only had to remove a coating shortly after it was applied to redo a section....i polished it off with a wheel, doesn't take long

1. Clay bar to remove the coating? How do you its removed? You dont
2. Feather it in really well? How do you do that? how do you know?
The only tru way to know that you have removed the coating is by machine polishing, documented on every detailing site.
Armor Shield? The best? What makes it the best? Its better then CarPro Finest? Modesto? Come on!

i wouldn't trust clay, but i did look around and apparently it's a thing.....but a uniform removal seems imperative, and a coating comes off so easy with a wheel, I'd think it would be more work to get it done properly with clay
i am not familiar with Armor Shield and don't know how it measure up to Gyeon CanCoat or Polish Angels Glass and High Gloss Combo, so for now, i'll stick with what I'm familiar with...or recommendations from pros im familiar with at least
