The cases are cast aluminum. I believe they are coated with something to make them look uniform, but not sure.

Then could I use aluminum mag wheel cleaner without messing up any chrome

Bad choice, you`ll have dried polish in the rough areas, You`ll be unable to buff it out with a rag and wind up using one of the products mentioned above to remove it

The stains in your pictures should be easily cleaned up with a modicum of effort as I've described. SG is remarkably effective. My '04 has a few weeps as yours, but still looks pretty good. I'll get some pics.

It isn't perfect, hasn't washed in a while. But it has 55,000 miles on it and I've been into it a couple times.
