Default Forwards back to Mids?

Yes, yes, I know there is a thread on this somewhere (I'm search-tarded) but how difficult/expensive will it be to return from forwards to mids?

My dad put JayBrake forwards on my bike (2005 FXDL) a number of years ago and all the stock parts are gone. I managed to pick up a set of mid-mounts and have been using them as a secondary leg position, and low and behold I like the mid positioning better.

The Jaybrakes have the master attached, so I'm assuming I'll need a new rear master? Also, I do not have a bike lift - do you think this is something I could install myself? If not, how much can I expect to pay my local shop between parts and labor (all I have are the mid pegs and mounts at this point)? Thanks!

Default I need of the same info!

I definitely am I need of the same info. I do not know what brand forward controls I have on my 2006 FXDBI but I can't stand them and want to know what I need to do in order to go back to mids. I do not know what parts or anything but definitely something I want to do myself.

Biggest factor is does your inner (and outer) primary have the thru hole for the shifter? If not, then the whole primary drive/alternator may have to be removed to install a new inner primary. I didn't feel up to that job and rounded up all the parts and got my local indy to do it; a few hours work for him; worth it to me.

Since you replaced the original mids, mids will fit your bike now. You can look up part numbers for the pieces you'll need, and check Ebay for used ones, way cheaper than new from Harley. I wouldn't get after market pegs and brackets, heard of them breaking, not worth the savings if that happened. You could do it without a lift, but it would make working on the bike a lot easier, and you'll probably need one some day if you keep doing your own maintenance; even some of the cheap ones are adequate if you're careful and tie the bike down to them so it won't rock or tilt.

Good websites to look up part numbers:

I think bikes handle better with mids, prefer them too, with highway pegs to stretch out. Did the mid change from forwards on my 883, have most of the parts to do it on my 1200.

I was able to do mine in less than an hour for about $50. However, I had the stock master on my bike still and the shaft through the primary was still there. It is a farily easy process, but will be made slightly more difficult since you will need to source a master and will have to likely rerun a brake line to your new master in the stock location. You shouldn't need a lift to do any of the work, just a low stool or something to sit on next to the bike. An advantage you have is that you will have a jaybrake forward set up to sell when its all done, likely making your mid set up completely free!

Went to Harley yesterday - big mistake. Parts guy gave me a list that came out to $639 all said and done. I was like yeah, let me just RSVP a HELL to the NO on that.

The master itself is $180 but the new line and whatnot brought the list up considerably after that. I even told him that I already have the mounts and pegs. I'm probably just going to use what he gave me as a grocery list and scour eBay and the classifieds here for a few months.

And yeah, mine is an 05 and it has that little access cover so I wont have to r&r the entire primary.

Anyone who has their stock take-offs, PM me. No way I'm gonna pay Harley my first born on this!

I just did a quick ebay search for 'dyna mid controls', you should have no problem finding everything you need at reasonable prices.

I put mid pegs on my bike but left the controls forward and it works well for me.
