Default Engine work needed soon?

I have a 95 FXD with a 1340 evo that's approaching 50k miles. Is there any major work that will soon be required on the engine? What starts to wear out over time that needs replacing? I want to be preemptive so that I'm not left on the side of the road during a long ride. I love riding, but I'm not really into fixing bikes so I'm thinking of having some work done this winter if there's something due for replacing. Thanks in advance.

I'd think about replacing the lifters and inner cam bearings. They are both common failures in EVO's.

Welcome to the forum.
Unless the bike was not maintained well and/or constantly thrashed. I wouldn't worry about it, those Evo's were pretty reliable. You might want to have the cam chain tensioner checked, and when it's in the shop have the tech look it over for anything obvious.

Thanks. For the first 17 years of it's life, only 23k miles was put on it and as far as I can tell they weren't hard miles. I've put on 26k miles in 2 years and I've maintained it pretty well. Not being a mechanic I just don't know enough about engines and what to expect as it gets older.

The EVO's don't have cam chain tensioners to worry about, motors are pretty solid, just check the usual stuff like wheel bearings, neck bearings, clean electrical contacts, I have learnt that voltage regulators have about a 10 year life expectancy and when it goes will leave you on the side of the road with a dead battery, clean the carb, the only issue with the EVO was a cylinder base gasket that would start weeping but won't leave you stranded

I'd probably replace the lifters and make sure the oil screen for the lifters is nice and clean. Go on the EVO board for more suggestions.

EVO's have gear drive cams, no tensioners, replace the fluids regularly and ride it, they are solid motors.
