Default Gauntlet to Batwing?

Getting chilly in Arizona, in the mornings, and I'm thinking about going with a full batwing fairing this year. Does anyone who's gone from the Gauntlet fairing to the Batwing, care to share your experience?

I'm wondering if it's worth the several hundred dollars or so, to outfit the bike for the winter? And did you just leave the batwing in place, all summer?

My last bike had a batwing fairing on it and it made a big difference in the cooler temp. I also felt about the same temps in the summer with the batwing as I did with a regular windshield. I want a batwing for my current bike but haven't talked myself into paying for one yet.

How cold do you plan on riding?

Personally, if I were you I'd look into a larger windshield for winter like the MS fats. But I suggest that because IMO batwings on these bikes (or any bike without hard bags) just looks terribly out of place. I have a MS slim 17in on my bike and love it, enough protection for the cold or rainy days, yet still allows enough cooling on summer rides so that I dont get hot and my arms dont get fatigued.

Also if you dont plan on riding down in temps much below 30, I would say dont waste you money. Maybe spend a little bit of what you have budgeted on a batwing twords some good riding gear that is suited for the weather if you dont already have some.

I GO from no fairing to the batwing for trips... big difference in protection, batwing keeps the wind off your hands too... i rode in 36 degree temp with my summer gloves..... i would get the added wind deflectors also they stopped it from coming up and under to my midsection

I agree with Inkjeter.. get the lower deflectors.. they're less than $30 and make a real difference.

The main reason I originally went with the Batwing was to keep my hands from freezing. Out here in
the desert Southwest, the weather is often quite good year round, but colder than hell in the winter,
so a lot of people ride year round and I found that even heated gloves weren't keeping my hands
warm enough. So I decided to gamble on a Batwing.... it worked!

In the 4 years since I got the Batwing, I've found that it increases my comfort level a lot under all
conditions while still allowing lots of air flow around me.. just not as strong or turbulent.

Esthetics are a personal choice.. I grew up on BSAs, Triumphs and Nortons back in the 60s and when
I think "motorcycle", I still envision those raw bikes.. but I never rode them for 8-10 hours a day or
14 days in row. Back then 200 miles was a L-O-O-N-G trip.. now it's thousands.

Get the Batwing..

I ride with a Ness narrowglide 3/4 fairing on my Bob. This last week I did a Stage 1 setup on my wifes uncle's Streetglide so I was riding it every day to work to data log for tuning. It is a HUGE difference from my bike in the cold. To me my fairing don't do **** as far as the cold is concerned. I use my fairing to mainly break wind on my mid body and obviously the looks. I personally don't like the batwing for looks or the buffetting or the feedback that comes back through the bike/bars but it does block a LOT of wind in comparison. My preference for a Dyna if it were me, would be a full size windshield and go detach on it for the day's you're not riding it work. Drop it and be able to roll around with it off on the nice days (which we have alot of here in AZ in the winter). Good luck with your choice.

No windshield will protect you like a fairing will.
Quick release is the only way to go.

I much prefer the batwing over a windshield and have both.

Love my Batwing with the fork lowers, they really work. I fabed up some extentions for the fork lowers so they would clear the engine guard when turning the bars lock to lock.
