Gauntlet to Batwing?
I'm wondering if it's worth the several hundred dollars or so, to outfit the bike for the winter? And did you just leave the batwing in place, all summer?
Personally, if I were you I'd look into a larger windshield for winter like the MS fats. But I suggest that because IMO batwings on these bikes (or any bike without hard bags) just looks terribly out of place. I have a MS slim 17in on my bike and love it, enough protection for the cold or rainy days, yet still allows enough cooling on summer rides so that I dont get hot and my arms dont get fatigued.
Also if you dont plan on riding down in temps much below 30, I would say dont waste you money. Maybe spend a little bit of what you have budgeted on a batwing twords some good riding gear that is suited for the weather if you dont already have some.
The main reason I originally went with the Batwing was to keep my hands from freezing. Out here in
the desert Southwest, the weather is often quite good year round, but colder than hell in the winter,
so a lot of people ride year round and I found that even heated gloves weren't keeping my hands
warm enough. So I decided to gamble on a Batwing.... it worked!
In the 4 years since I got the Batwing, I've found that it increases my comfort level a lot under all
conditions while still allowing lots of air flow around me.. just not as strong or turbulent.
Esthetics are a personal choice.. I grew up on BSAs, Triumphs and Nortons back in the 60s and when
I think "motorcycle", I still envision those raw bikes.. but I never rode them for 8-10 hours a day or
14 days in row. Back then 200 miles was a L-O-O-N-G trip.. now it's thousands.
Get the Batwing..
