Default Installing new primary cover question

So I got a new primary cover and in the instructions it says to disconnect the battery. So, why do I need to disconnect the battery to install this?

So when you pull it,if the starter shaft sticks to it,it"ll kick the solenoid on and spin the starter. So take the cable off to be safe.

Because every set of Harley instructions begins with disconnecting the battery. If it's the outer primary don't worry about it. If it's the inner then maybe but I probably wouldn't even then

It is literally just the primary cover and gasket Im replacing. Not going internal at all.

You should be good. Just make sure the "IGN" and "RUN" switches are in the "OFF" position to prevent accidental startup. I did as much a few months ago checking the tensioner and no probs. Happy wrenching!

Okay, just for ***** and giggles. Lets say you don't disconnect the battery and you're getting down and dirty with the primary cover but need to stand up to get a different tool or widget. You stand up and some how accidently bump the starter button when reaching up to balance yourself. Need I say more?
