Default Air cleaner question

I have a 2012 FXDC that I have purchased V&H 3 inch slip-ons along with the V&H Fuelpak 3 for and I am also wanting to by a high flow air cleaner. I have more or less decided on a V&H V02 air cleaner. I can buy this air cleaner so that it uses the stock HD air cleaner cover or go with the naked version where I have to buy a V&H face plate. My question is this. I get caught in the rain often while riding. Would it be better to buy the model that uses the stock air cleaner cover to keep any rain out or go for the naked model and risk getting caught in a downpour with an exposed air filter? Also how much if any airflow would I be giving up by using the model that requires the stock air cleaner cover? Does the stock cover restrict airflow enough that I would lose the benefit of the high flow filter? Thanks for your comments.

Unless you submerge you bike in water, you are unlikely to have a problem with moisture getting into your throttle body. I've ridden through plenty of rainstorms with an exposed high flow a/c without issues. However, if it makes you feel better you can purchase a rain sock (also known as a pre filter) for your a/c. It is an extra water repellant barrier that you can slip on and off as needed. The sock/filter still allows enough air into your engine while keeping rain out.
Outerwears makes one specifically for the V&H VO2: http://www.outerwearsracing.com/products.asp?cat=12925

I could be wrong, but it looks like the naked uses the stock cover and the VO2 uses a face plate. You can get a V&H Naked right now on ebay for $120-125

You can use just about and round cover there is that mounts with one center hole. If you use the stock cover with an aftermarket ac you will still get more air than stock because the backing plate is smaller and its not going to be restricting the flow. FYI: The arlen ness and others come with a K&N cleanable oiled filter

Thanks for the reply's. The rain sock sounds like a workable solution for times when I get caught out in the rain. As for the stock air cleaner not reducing the airflow I am still on the fence with that one. I like the looks of the stock air cleaner more than I do the V&H covers but I want the best airflow I can get so I will ponder that one a little more. Thanks again.

A stock air cleaner does reduce the flow. Put your stock oem cover over the V&H V02 and your good to go
