Hi folks. I'm interested in getting a windshield for long travels (~3 hours or more one way) and I saw the HD Quick Release windshield on HD's website, part #58346-06. Does anyone have any experience with this particular windshield?
I did several Google searches and I guess I'm trying to figure out if this would be appropriate for me. I have an '08 FXDL (dyna low rider), I'm 5'11" and I wear a full closed helmet. The negative reviews about wind buffeting has be putting off buying it and traveling long distance. But from what I read, buffeting seems to be mixed with a lot of people although no one has really mentioned about this particular HD windshield.
If anyone has any feedback/tips whatever I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks
One last thing, I would consider other types of windshields but I want something with a quick release function or some sort for easy/fast removal.
I got the quick release and 14" windshield for my 08 FXDWG. I wish now I had got the 16" windshield because of the wind buffiting. So with your height I wouldn't go any shorter than 16-18 inchines high to get away from the wind buffiting. I just didn't want to look through the windshield.
I have that windshield on my '05 FXDL and have mixed feelings about it. I cut it down to 15" to be able to see properly with it. However, I then moved bottom out 1" with homemade brackets to change angle to match forks and reduce buffeting. Unfortunately, that 1" on bottom made windshield about 2" too short. I'm thinking about buying a replacement 17" shield which might be ideal? I'm 5'9".
It doesn't buffet horribly, but that really depends on which helmet I use and speed. Very little buffeting with 3/4 helmet, different levels with different full faces. A few years ago I had same windshield on sportster and had no buffeting with a 1/2 helmet but a lot with full face. However, I get more buffeting on the dyna with that 1/2 helmet than with the 3/4. Buffeting starts around 65mph and gets stronger the faster you go.
However, I've always had buffeting problems, even my last bike that came with a fairing and on which I tried 3 different windshields with no luck.
Buffeting is caused by the air coming up from around the tank and into the low pressure zone behind the windscreen. You can feel the airflow with your hand and follow it to its source. If you stick your arm out across your chest you can block it, or if you lift your legs up along each side of the tank you can also block it. This is hit and miss depending on the bike and windshield used. The best way to deal with it is to add some lowers. This was a big problem on my Sporty and after experimenting with a few home-fabbed lowers I managed to get rid of about ninety percent of the turbulence.
I had that shield, it works very well overall from a wind deflection stand point but as mentioned buffeting is going to be a challenge with practically anything (and sometimes it depends upon wind direction since that windshield can act like a sail). I recently sold mine because I ride with a full face most of the time and decided I didn't like the looks of the windshield and wanted to just keep the wind off my chest.
If you are planning some long trips I would do a windshield such as the one you're looking at, keep front flow off arms, chest, head. To deal with the buffeting though do some searches, quite a few people have had incredible success with a deflector attached underneath the lower triple tree where the headlight clamps on thus keeping the wind flowing under the tree and deflecting it downwards. Think of an upside down pie plate cut in half with the sides aimed towards the frame to deflect wind down.
no experience with the compact but I do have the HD Super Sport windshield on my street bob. very similar to the compact but just a tad bit skinnier and taller. I am 5'9" and the edge of the shield is level with the tip of my nose. I love it and it works great. I notice very little buffeting almost non existent. good luck
a back rest does a lot to support you against the wind, but I still have a mid-height windshield to keep bugs & rain off of me... I have a shield small enough that it doesn't cause enough buffeting to notice but does keep bugs off and improve turbulence.
if you want to reduce buffering, as mentioned before get some lowers.
