Hello Everyone, I have a 13 fat bob with a stage 1 upgrade. from time to time when starting the bike it backfires and then I have to restart it again. Upon backfiring it resets my fuel gauge "low fuel" appears on the gauge and my fuel light then comes on regardless if the tank is full or not. it then normally readjusts but its happened like 7 times now and its kind of annoying. It has the super chips tuner in it, should I just re-flash it? Any ideas of what is happening?
any insight would be great thanks
ERIK
I Have had the same issue for some time now, kinda, I don't get the fuel gauge / light issue, just the occassional back fire when starting. I originally change the AC and added the Xieds with the stock exhaust, added the Xieds to cool things down. About a year later added the Rineharts exhaust. It was a few thousand miles and a long period of time later, year or more, that the back firing started. So I started my tuner search with my limited budget. Superchips introduced their new tuner so I picked it up. I have used three different tunes on the programmer and although I can feel the difference performance wise with the tuner, I still get the occassional back fire, usually when the bike is hot like at the gas station after filling it up, onc and a while it happens cold, but mostly hot. My next investment is going to be a new tuner, either the Power Visions with the O2 sensors and a dyno tune or the Thundermax tuner.
Hopefully you are able to isolate your problem, I will keep an eye on this thread to see what others say.
Mine's been doing this for quite a while. I have a very basic stage 1 - SE slip-ons, AC, dealer download. It only happens on very short stops (fueling). I don't get a backfire, but the motor gets maybe 1/2 revolution before it dies with a loud CLUNK and sometimes a popping sound, the 'lo range' message and fuel light comes on, sometimes the 'vinerror' message flashes, then the display resets to odometer. Second try it fires right up. I had the dealer check it last time I was in, but of course they couldn't duplicate the problem. For a short time, shifting into neutral before shutting down seemed to fix it, but that doesn't work anymore for me.
I agree, it's really annoying. I'm watching this thread too - hopefully someone else has dealt successfully with this.
If your riding real hard then coming in and shutting right down, fueling and starting up again, you may want to change your habit there and either let it to cool down a bit more before starting or ease up on it a few blocks before you stop. Also be sure you are hitting your starter button all the way through it starting and not letting off as soon as it sounds like it's going to start vs when it's really started.
If your already doing that than maybe something more to do with the tune.
what everyone is describing is exactly what is happening, 1/2 a revolution then dies with a thud, usually at a gas station or when starting up cold. I really dont ride my bike hard at all, so I dont think its that. Its just annoying that I get the low milage and or "vinerror" message and then it resets itself and starts right up. It hasnt done it in a week so we shall see.
I experienced the same prob after going stage II, even with the PV map - every now-n-then I'd get the backfire and had to do a restart. Then I tried a little trick I used on my old carbed FXR - hold the throttle open just a tad and then hit the start button. For whatever reason, my FB with EFI starts a lot more consistently now with almost no backfires. I know it sounds crazy, but it works for me!
