So as the title says I'm going to be putting on 12" black outlaws on my 2012 WG. I have already done a lot of reading on here and have noticed that Magnum seem to be "the best". Just wondering if they are really worth the extra money. For me being in Canada, they are going to cost a lot with the way the dollar is right now. So, I ask, is it really worth the additional cost vs LA choppers or Burly?
One last question while I'm at it. I am going to be running the Wild 1 12" Outlaws with the Wild 1 1.5" risers, what size of cable will I need? From what I've read it looks like +6" but I thought that I'd check with all the pros on here.
I have the 12" mini ape kit from Harley on my '14 Wide Glide. I went with +4 and I could have gone +2 with everything but the upper brake line which should be +6. My total rise is 12" so you can be the judge.
I have never owned any brand but Magnum but I can tell you they are sturdy cables.
I have 10" Wild1s and a 2" riser. Magnum shield cables and ya there nice but I'm sure the other brands are fine. If you want perfect fit cables disconnect all the cables and the brake line swap bars and measure how much more you need. I know plus 6" will work but to much sucks.
first, everyone has their own style but a 12 inch rise with "apes" just isn't enough in my opinion. I think you'll end up wishing for more height in no time at all. have you sat/ridden on anything with say 16" or 18" rise?. I started with the factory "buckhorns on my wide glide with 3 1/2 riser. went to a 13" "mini ape" with 1 1/5 rise and want more. I bought a new +6 clutch cable and it's perfect length. the front brake line is simply at it's limit as are the throttle cables. +6 on those would also be perfect. however im now going with true 16" chrome apes and the clutch cable I just replaced will be a waste. oh yea back to the point!. go +6 on all cables and just go with a motion pro set since your mounting black bars. if you haven't pulled the trigger yet, consider more rise.
Thanks 1stfdxwg. I have not ordered anything yet and will definitely give it some thought on going bigger. Thankfully, being up in Canada means I have at least 2 more months before I can even get close to riding without snow. One of the reasons I was looking at the 12" was I like the bars being more vertical rather than following the rake of the fork. Check f3fidy garage for pics of his WG. The 12" look really good on his bike and I have sent him a PM but maybe I'll get lucky and he will chime in. Not sure if it really makes a difference or not but I'm 6'2 running a silhouette solo seat. It certainly isn't easy making decisions without any pictures so if anyone has any pics that they'd be willing to post I'd be very thankful for it (I have already lurked around but didn't see much).
I will say I wish I went with the 12"s . I had rode a used Wg at the dealership with HD 10"s and it seemed like plenty . But nowwwww a little more might be nice. Now I'm 5'8" and my C&C seat sits 1" lower than stock. I met a guy in Laconia NH. he had 16" on his Newer Gw. With a stock seat and he had been stopped rollin into town for tall bars. There eye level. Your a big dude maybe 14" might be a happy medium. My 2"riser is measured from the top tree to the center of the bar. So I really only got like 1.375" out of it. Which is way too close to my adjustable preloaders. Fyi.
Thanks for the heads up on the risers height Badboy. I am certainly torn between the 12" or the 14" now. Hopefully I can find someplace that has a good return policy in case I'm not happy with whichever ones I choose to go with. The picture that you posted definitely helps. I might just have to fab up a mock set in both 12" and 14" and see which feel better.
