My 2000 FXDWG has all the typical upgrades including 2nd stage, Cam upgrade, of course, yaddah yaddah. After 80,000 miles, the Mikuni started dribbling gas out the overflow no problem it must be a bad float or needle or seat. Easy solution (or so one would think) rebuild kit. The carb no longer dribbled it GUSHED fuel out of the overflow on every cold start. A light tap on the bowl would make it stop. Took it apart 6 times this is a very basic carburetor and checked all of the obvious: float, float height, needle, needle seat, and even jetting. All good!
Now for the unexpected find I decided to drain the tank thinking fuel was the problem. Gasoline drained out of the Pingle very slowly. Hmmm .., I tipped the tank up and removed the valve only to find the screen completely covered with the remnants of the tank liner. Whatever Harley lined my tank with turned into a gooey mess that, I believe, found its way into the needle and seat where it coagulated keeping it from closing. The new solution is now a very expensive one. Think new tank.
Randy at Cycle Visions in San Diego said he has never seen this happen and he just learned that Harley no longer lines fuel tanks.
This was, without a doubt, the most unpleasant project that I have ever completed.
My bet is that there are tens of thousands of Harley owners out there as yet unaware that they are to be faced with this problem in the future.
Thanks - I just ordered a new tank that matches the existing. Do not have the time to clean up another Harley screw up. Hope the new one is not lined - I think they stopped doing that.
I hate to say I'm glad to not be alone on this issue but good to know I did not do anything to cause the problem.
I can only hope we do not "see" thousands of bikes with this problem in the future.

Were you able to get a new tank that matches your 2000 paint scheme from HD's paint shop?
The picture and description match the original - "LUXRCHRED/V.BLACK". That may not be a good thing because the fenders have a lot of hard cross country and Canada miles on them. The tank will be pristine and the rest so so.
