My bike (2012 FXDWG) has been suffering from VINERR issues on hot starts. Even leaving me stranded twice because the error would drain my battery. During a ton of research, I found that the 2012 dynas have a CAN BUS system and that a voltage drop below 11V at the ECM could cause some funny issues.
In my situation, What we found was that my map (SE super tuner) did not have the ACRs enabled (Automatic Compression Release). So what was happening is that my bike would always start on the compression cycle and the starter would have to use a lot of power to turn over the engine, thus causing a voltage drop across the system.
There still may be another issue but since the ACRs were enabled I have yet to have another VINERR.
YMMV but it is worth checking out if you are having trouble with the error code
ah, i guess that rules my bike out. i have 96", no acr's. interesting theory though, i hope it helps a lot of the other guys who keep getting this error.
