I didn't bother to ask why you wanted to change shocks seeing as your bike is a '97 thinking maybe they are blown,or rusted out. If you really want a ride upgrade don't stop at 412's they will not be a big improvement and once the novelty wears off you will find yourself thinking that realistically. Sure they have a good name and are in-expensive but you will be way better served if you put down more money now and avoid the future regret
I agree completely with this.

They're actually worth about $12.....They just sell for $400.
they are not blown and im not looking for a ride upgrade. its just when my wife and i are both on it i feel like we ride pretty low so i wanted some heavy duty ones

Here's a link to Progressive's website. Based on what you're describing, the 412's with the heavy duty spring rate would probably work well for you.
does anyone know a resource i can use to find out the stock length of my shocks so i know what length to get?
i measured how the guy at harley told me and i got 12.5 inches. the drag specialties shocks dont come in that length.
the 412 shocks come in 12 and 13 inches. i picked 12 and there was a note saying stock fxds and fxdx have 13 inch shocks stock.
i have an fxdl and can not find the stock length anywhere.
i dont want to order until i know for sure.
also, why do the shocks i linked from drag specialties suck and these 412's are awesome?
just curious
thanks
this is very frustrating. i called the harley shop and after talking for 10 minutes he still couldnt tell me what length i need?
so what the hell does the parts counter usually do when people want to replace shocks?
i just want the stock length but a heavy duty application

I never said they were awesome, just that it seemed like the best fit for what you are wanting. The Drag Specialties shocks are made to their specifications by Progressive, not to the specifications of Progressive which probably explains why the 412's are a little more money than the Drag Specialties. I believe the FXDL shock length in 97 was 12.5".

i know you didnt say they were awesome. just a word i tossed in there.
i measured and got 12.5 inches.
there is no 12.5 inch option for either the drag specialties shocks i linked or the 412's you linked.
i dont know what to do at this point cause apparently the harley parts guy does not know either

Order 12.5" or 12.6" shocks with heavy duty rate springs.
