Apologies for posting this in the Dyna section, but you guys are my people!
Had an old friend contact me out of the blue last week, says her boyfriend is looking to get rid of his father's old '86 FXRS. Says they'd rather see it go to a good home (someone who will fix her up) rather than sell it to some random person for parts.
Had pics sent to me last night, bike looks very 90s "Live to Ride" - chromed out, Thunderheader, not the original paint - but here's the kicker: bike has been sitting in storage since 2002. Fluids were drained a few years after the initial storage, but she hasn't run in over 13 years.
By the way, the bike is in another state. So I'd have to arrange transpo.
Going through the classifieds and Craigslist here in SoCal, looks like I can pick up solid running FXRs (comparable years) for between $5-8k.
I've been in the market for a project bike, but I'm not sure where to even start with this one. My total budget for a summer project is right around $5k and this will obviously need new tires ($$), plus a complete tear down ($$$?)...
What do you guys think? I think it'd be a fun project and I know the FXR are pretty collectible right now, but including the initial purchase price (whatever that is...I don't want to insult him but I can't see offering much) plus mods and upgrades, I can't see this bike coming together for less than 5k, probably not even less than 8k...
Id offer 3500 and go from there. Why was it parked? If it's a runner that needs fluids and tires it's worth 4500-5000 all day.at 3500 you cover tires fluids and going through her....now if she wasn't running when she was parked. ..Id dig deeper as to why and figure in what it might take to get her going. ..good luck
I'd give $3,000 tops, you're gonna need to freshen up a lot of stuff on it.
Nice bike but if it's been sitting that long with no fluids in it and was not properly stored.....Not good.
Wow, see 3k is already way more than I was thinking.
Again, considering I can by a running (and usually rebuilt) FXR for btw 5k-8k, it seems I would already be behind the 8-ball if I were to purchase this bike. It hasn't run in over 13 years and we all know how expensive tires are...including the purchase price, my 5k project budget probably wont even cover getting this bike just up and running again...
I'd just pass on it and buy one that's running....It'd be a good project, but in my opinion you're gonna be way over your 5K budget by the time it's road ready.
Tires are the least of your expense worries. You could get a set of Shinko 777's for $120 to get it on the road. What are they asking for it? On another forum a member paid $3000 for a fully functional solid running late 80's FXR. A bike that has been sitting for a long period of time with the fluids drained sounds like a potential money pit.
With it being in another state and not being able to put eyes on it is another downer. If it were local, you could ask permission to drain the fuel if it hasn't been done, buy a battery and put fresh fluids and plugs in it to see if you could get it running. Then you could make a decision and come up with a price that's fair to both of you. But that isn't the case so after factoring in shipping cost, I wouldn't be willing to pay more than $2000 total on a gamble like this.
A non-running Harley Motor, Frame and matching Harley title has value, the rest is subjective. The Live to Ride theme will cost to replace original or maybe you can replace with your theme but does not add any value to the bike. Tires, wheel bearings, and brakes while you are in there is gonna cost you $500 if you do it yourself. Carb may as well be dumped for an S$S Super E at $400. Plugs, Wires, Oil Filter, Oil and Primary, tranny fluid is another $100 so assuming no other issues you will have $1k and your time in a $5 bike that needs a paint job. I wouldn't put more than $2500 in it.
