Default FL-Dyna Questions

So I did some searches and never really found the answer.

Backstory....looking to get another bike, its time. So I decided on a Dyna for its older look and want to "early FL" it to see if its a leaner/meaner touring rig. Want to be able to tour if I want, but I think a Dyna will just be a bit more like ridin an early with a little more modern take......JMO and I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time. Either way, I am determined to build one, while keeping it on the road as a DD as much as possible during the build. So I guess it will have its ugly stages.

The Question?....knowing that you are going to go to an FL front end, which model is the easiest to convert with the least parts.

Oh, it will be a 97 or 98 EVO with a carb.

First fork in the road to decide at:
-FL Softail front end. All parts readily available used or new. FLS triple tree, 41mm forks (sliders changed in 08), FL Softail wheel (again it changed in 08) FL Softail fender, Softail tins lightbar and windshield. Brakes and rotor, I can't speak for but I reused mine on my 08 Dyna. This front end look was 1958 and 59 only on early FLs.

-1960-84 FL front end. Triple trees show up on eBay on occasion but are pricey. They can be bought as reproductions. Headlight nacelle, used or reproduction, used or reproduction sporlights and windshield. Front forks from modern Electra Glide with matching (axle & bearing size) wheel. Electra Glide front fender.

- pony up for a new FLD Switchback front end.

FL-Dyna Interest Group can help out with other things like rear fenders, foot boards etc. Neither of these are direct bolt on, they require some grinding of the lower trees and maybe on the neck.

As far as touring goes, I have an Ultra Classic that tours only when the wife goes along. I have ridden the bike in the picture across the U.S. twice and will do so again this summer. Dynas are more comfortable when you are taller. Electra Glides are really at their best for passenger comfort while the driver gives up some space.

Knowing what I know now if they had the switchback in '07 I'd of bought it. Changed the bags, seat , wheels and some other things. Blue angel above gave you the link you need. Here's mine so far. Next to come--Chrome Dash, polished aluminum primary cover, cam cover and transmission cover. FLS front end or switchback front end? Questionable.

EDIT: I think '97-98 choices would be low rider, FXD or wide glide -I'd choose FXD. Just MY opinion.

I have my version of a touring Wide Glide. You can see in my signature the mods I have done. She handles better than stock, more roomy than the stock street glides and ultras that I have test driven and I think I can say she is a one of a kind.

Thanks for the info and those are some awesome bikes. Just starting to look and it looks like the WG gas the right dash I'm looking for.

Mountain, I've wanted to do that to mine since the day I got it. Robterras is my favorite example of how I want it to turn out.

After reading all 190+ pages on the FL/Dyna group forum, I'm fired up to get this going. Since carbs were present in the Dyna line till 2004 I will expand my search.
