Default Lesson Learned?

Having been a Gold Wing driver for a while, I got into the habit of filling my tank on the way home, so I won't have to worry about it on my next ride. This past December, I bought my 2k FXDX. With the weather getting better, I figure it's time to start getting back into the saddle and get rid of my cabin fever.

Old habits die hard, so on my way home on the Dyna, I topped off my tank the other day. I forgot how low the HD kickstand lets the little beast settle, but I didn't correlate that with the fuel tank. I should have!

Went out to put new mirrors on the Dyna and noticed something unusual happening around the tank bib. Took off the tank bib and I "blew a gasket!" (See picture)

Didn't want a new paint job THIS soon!

Well, guess I'll be spending riding time sanding my tank! DAMN!!!!

That hurts to look at! Sorry for the outcome here. Was it on OEM paint or was it a fresh paint job? I must admit I have never seen anything like that!

It got under the bib. I wiped off what I could see, plus I've been smelling gas in the garage the last few days. Looks like when the bike settled on it's kickstand, the fuel level brought it over the edge of the neck.

OEM paint. Kinda like that blue. Different from the black all the time. Unfortunately my paint inventory is only rattle can satin black.

Does that gas have a lot of ethanol in it?
Perhaps E10 destroys clear coat? Can it be repaired by reapplying clearcoat?

Yeah that sucks. The exact same thing happened to my old girl a couple of years ago. Hot fuel did quite a number on my paint job.
