Once again I'm amazed of incompetence of posters on these forums.
Have you ever taken a motorcycle gearbox apart and tried to understand how it works? Have you taken any gearbox apart and tried to understand how it works?
Have you succeeded with any of above?
If not, why are you posting here, in this thread?
If you have inevitable urge to post on the internet there is Facebook and other sites for BS, why reply to a technical question which requires some knowledge?
There is a neutral between all gears, the gearbox could not function otherwise. That neutral is not designed to be used as a neutral, but it is there.
I'm often amazed by the unhelpfulness and stigma of being a tough guy who knows everything on these sites. I didn't post to facebook because for whatever reason the keyboard warriors MC seems to hang out there and I actually wanted, you know, some ****ing help.
I do thank you for belittling me and berating me. I have the general concept of transmissions/gearboxes down, where I could follow the gears with my eyes, but sadly my experience is just research on the internet and books for now...but hey, we all gotta start somewhere.
My original question really boils down to; is it getting time to start saving up for a new transmission or not? I'm not going to go into my transmission and start tweaking gears to the .001. I dont have the time nor the patience for that.
Thank you for your "help".

... and you might ask why did I replace the tranny with just bad bearings? because I found a whole friggen pull out brand new tranny on ebay for 400 bucks.Hell of a lot easier to slide that puppy right in in one piece rather than strip mine down and rebuild it which if I recall required a press to get the shafts off the bearings.
Thats a damn good idea; I'll keep my eyes out for a new one. Just in case...
I have this exact same problem and im at about 40k miles.
Is there any options out there for new transmissions? I plan on doing a big bore 107 and hot cam with performance clutch at some point. Figured if trans goes i can shop for a performance trans? Any thoughts?
It's very possible there's nothing wrong with your transmission. While I wouldn't say there is a "neutral" between each gear the condition you are experiencing can happen between any two gears. It's possible that your shift is simply too soft. In other words you have shifted out of one gear but not into the next, and while sloppy shift forks could be at at play its not the only cause.
And yes, I have removed, repaired and replaced my transmission.
I suggest going to a good syn. transmission oil and lube all moving linkage for the shifter.
If you have ever had to resort to a lot pf pressure on the shifter it is possible the shifter paws may have been bent. They are rather soft and can bend slightly if pressure has been used trying to get it to shift. I have see it more than once.
Does the shifter fall back down or up into the center after shifting?
There's nothing wrong with your transmission. If anything adjust the shifter pawl and shift hard and firm. It's a Harley not a honda or Suzuki. You have to let it know you want to change gears.

Exactly. "False neutrals" between gears is common on HDs, ask any indy. They will tell you that some bikes do it between 2>3, some 3>4, and some 4>5, depending on the bike. A few get lucky and have no issues. Mine does it occasionally going into third when I do a lazy shift. If I focus on shifts and make sure they are firm, no issues.
BTW - clutch is adjusted perfectly w/Red Line Shockproof in trans. I have used several trans fluids (HD, Amsoil, Redline, etc) over the years and the 2>3 false neutral occasionally occurs regardless of the type/brand/weight of the trans fluid or adjustment of the clutch.
