The bike has done this twice within the past week or so, I think. I know it definately did it once tonight, but it seems like it did it the other day, and I just dismissed it as my goof up. Anyway..tonight i'm downshifting..and I shift down (I think it should have been going down to third)..so I do it, hit the throttle..and it's like i'm in neutral. Pull the clutch back in..downshift again..let out on the clutch...and about get thrown over the handlebars because it seems the thing shifted down to 2nd...mind you, i'm going along at about 40 mph...pull clutch back in, shift up and all is fine...it's odd. Any ideas?
Well, that wouldn't surprise me if it was possible that that were the case...but..when I down-shifted and let out on the clutch, it was like I was in neutral when I rolled on the throttle. So I pulled in the clutch, pushed the shifter down again and BLAMMO...2nd gear..[8D]
I had a similair problem with my 2002 FLSTC. Heres how I corrected it. I pulled off thetoe/heel shift level and then the black bushing. Clean out the bushing and grease the crap out of it. On my bike it was collecting water and grime and it was not returning to the proper position after shifting keeping the tranny in between gears. Now this is part of my maintance I do on my bike prior to riding season.

Now this sounds like it could definately be a possibility. Thanks, i'll try this.
