I don't mind riding in winds up to about 30mph,,,after that its a little more work than I like for a joy ride...

Just relax and let the bike move, don't fight it or over control.

Thanks folks for the awesome advice. I'm home now and shoulders still sore. This is my first time doing over 350 miles in a day and it was harrowing. Whenever I stopped at a gas station or for a quick break people would ask me how it was riding with the wind and commenting on how it was throwing their cars around. I definitely tried to stay loose, the throttle boss I bought the other day actually helped a bit in that I could lay my fingers out a bit. I have to remind myself that even though I've been on bikes off and on for many years that these are all new experiences for me, and I think I learned a lot. Didn't help that I kept noticing how I wasn't seeing any other riders out there! I81 is also extreme of all the interstates that I've been on, passing trucks every minute or so.

Still sucking back the Advil!

I wonder if a backrest would help in strong crosswinds.

I would not ride when wind speed exceeds this amount.

I used to get worked up in the wind. Over time I learned most of what has been told to you here the hard way. One thing I would have done was gotten off of 81. It is hard enough to ride that road without gusting wind.
A couple of years ago I rode my sport tourer to WV and on the way home I ran into some substantial cross winds when I hit 64. I rode for about two hours leaned over about 20 degrees to the right. Every now and then I would hit a cross gust or a break and have to adjust so I didn't change lanes! I was beat when I finally got home.
