I had been noticing that when I shut my FXD off, sometimes it gives a real hard cough and kick.
That just happened again today, but this time it was all I could do to get it restarted. Had to open the throttle and it ran very weak, engine light came on. So I shut it off (the main key) for a few minutes and barely could get it started again.
Limped it home, could not let it idle or it would die, felt the exhaust once home and the front exhaust heat was twice as hot as the rear. It did feel like it was running on a single cylinder. CRAP!
This problem can get deep. Let's start with simple stuff. Swap your plug wires. Put a new plug in the rear jug. Mind you this maybe simple all the way to an ecm failure. Trouble shooting is a process of elemination. Any codes how many miles and year of the bike plz.
I just added the T-Max ECM, only has ~ 500 miles on the T-Max since install.
In the morning I will get new plugs. You are saying that the plug wires can physically be switched b/c the coil is a dual fire, meaning both cylinders fire at the same time right?
As far as codes, not sure how to deal with that yet, most likely will have to plug the laptop into the ECM ?

I don't know about the modern computerized engines but with the 'old tech' engines (some in particular) a "dirty start" or "dirty stop" would f' up a spark plug - it would appear to fire fine in open air but not under pressure. Just change the plugs before you put a lot of work into anything else.

Good advice there. Before you do any tuning work, always start with fresh plugs.
would like to pick back up on this thread. I have not done anything yet except read the plugs out of curiosity. From an online graphical chart my plugs are reading on the lean side.
Next, I remembered that thread on the leaking tank hose problem, and with my tank almost empty I used a flash light and peaked thru the fuel cap, and saw bubbling when the fuel pump starts.
HHmmm. I am going to start with the eliminations stated above, but cannot help wondering how a leaking fuel hose would affect the T-Max. I would think lean plugs may be a sign of inconsistant fuel pressure, and maybe the hard stops that I am experiencing.
