Rode my new wide glide to work this morning..I only live 3 miles from work. Stopped on the way to fill up with gas. Filled her to the top. Parked her out front at work a few minutes later and went on with my work day. Here it is about 230 pm and the temperature outside is 93 or more and she is parked in the sun. Go to to have a smoke, standing there next to her and notice a spot on the asphalt just behind the swing arm. Thought it was a reflection at first, looked closer...a drip, then another, get down to look and rub my fingers on it...gasoline!
Is there an overflow tube for the fuel tank for thermal expansion? I can't see the tube hanging down but it is definitely gasoline. It is a steady drip and I did fill her all the way up and then didn't ride but a 1/2 mile from the station to work. Nothing coming from around the gas cap and I loosened it to check and it was not holding any pressure so I figure it has to vent off somewhere. Never had one do that before but then I usually keep riding when I fill up.
Gas was cold/cool when you pumped it from the ground tanks into your tank. During the day the gas expanded due to the heat and the level finally vented to the ground. Not so full next time.
Yeah, I should have known that. I worked around bulk gasoline my entire life and normally do leave a little room but this time I wanted to fill her to the top so I could check to see how far I can run on a tank. Didn't realize I had her that full and that it was going to get that hot. Never happened on the street glide I had before but there are a couple of big differences. The first being no matter what you did you couldn't get the SG that full because the gas cap was in the middle and it was always leaning on the side stand when filled. The wide glide has the gas cap on the high side of the tank allowing complete filling. The other factor is that I never worked 3 miles from where I lived before. Since I retired no more 50 mile commutes in Houston traffic. Now I just have a little part time gig around the corner from the house way out in the country in Louisiana.
