SS has less tensile strength than grade 8. Tensile strength is what you need for clamping force. (ultimate tensile strength ) Don't know about hardness, that's completely different, it is resistance to deformation.

There many different grades of stainless. ARP uses (essentially) 17-4 PH (precipitation hardened) rated at 170,000 tensile. Typical grade 8 is rated at 150,000.
I don't have (ie, haven't looked for) any data on shear, shock, ductility, etc.
Are the bolts failing due to power pulses? This is why âcrush driveâ systems were developed with the chain drive bikes.
If this is the case, then HD might look into a 6 bolt pattern, instead of 5.
For automobile wheels, a 5 bolt wheel is 40% stronger than a 4 bolt. (According to Chrysler.)
We all know 6 bolt mains are superior to 4 bolts mains. And 4 bolt mains are superior to 2 bolt mains. Heck, anything is better than 2 bolt mains!

I build orthopedic tools for surgeons regularly from 17-4 then heat treat for maximum strength ie: condition H900 RC 35-40
Carpenter steel handbook list any steel with 10% or more chromium as SS
I had read that the pulley bolts were purposely a softer grade so in the case they did back out, they would snap off and the bike would still roll instead of locking your wheel when it hits the swing arm. Key is to use locktite and replace the bolt with each use.
Thanks for the corrections, I was just speaking in general. As in generally available hardware store SS vs hardware store grade 8.
Sorry if this double posted....dang router!!
Correct! Most hardware are non magnetic...303 / 304 / 18-8 / maybe even 316. These do not have enough carbon / iron to heat treat for strength and hardness
Another issue even with ARP is the application correct ie: length \ diameter at head / dia at shoulder...non threaded portion / length of shoulder.
I,m adding srocket spacers and that will also be a factor.
I am going to buy from someone who states direct replacement for my application.
Then we have the whole Chinese counterfeit issue where major distributors are fooled. A lot of my jobs require full certs for any hardware or material.
