Default Cam Install continued

Continuing from previous thread about Cam Bearings......

So I got the cam bearing seated, albeit probably not by the recommended way; in any case they are seated and look to be properly installed.

The other hurdle that I ran into today was when I went to snug on the cam gear and the pinion gear to check for proper alignment. The cam gear bolt went on no problem, but the pinion gear would spin on me as I tried to put the bolt in.

Im not even to the point of torquing them down to specs yet, but i did have the rear tire on the ground and I leaned on the back brake with the same result, also the bike was in 6th gear.

Any suggestion on why my pinion gear would be spinning?

Thanks for any assistance....

Sounds like the engine is in neutral. If it is spinning while the bike is in gear it means the engine is some out disengaged from the drive train. That means either transmission or clutch problem. If you have the bike on the ground and it is truly in any gear, it should not be movable.

I was just getting ready to add while I was waiting for my new cam tensioners, I changed my clutch cable. I did a quick adjustment on it but didnt dial it one hundred percent. It seemed that the transmission was still in top gear, and when I took the bike off the ramp I was able to click down and up through all gears with the new clutch cable, so I wasnt sure if the new clutch cable would be a related issue, but its definitely something worth to re-visit.

I do not have the cam gear locking tool. Believe me, that wasnt from a lack of trying to find one. I called all around my area and looked online but had no luck in finding one; I would only find ones for TC88. But reading on what others have done and even mentioned in the S&S cam install video you can just put the back tire on the ground and have it in gear so I thought I would be fine without it.

I actually just found a place today online that sells the locking tool for the TC96; they are a couple hours north of here.

I am guessing as mentioned before, I must need adjustment on my new clutch cable. The locking gear shouldnt even be necessary at this point.

Hopefully thats all it is and everything works out okay.

Wasn't tryin to be a smartass. Wheel on the ground trick should work. Just awkward. In fact, awkward enough for me to order the tool from Harley. Just cuz I'm a clutz.

Same here brother, and I am newbie working on engines, but I want to learn and this didnt seem to be too daunting of a task.

So I called two Harley shops today, one said they didnt have the tool but could order and it could be here in 5 days. The other shop said they dont have it and that "no" Harley shops carry that tool for sale.... I ran into this before when I fist started looking for it, but I figured maybe I would get a different answer this time....

I get so frustrated with these HD shops! The one closest to me didnt have the cam chain tensioners so I had to have a buddy pick them up for me and bring to me from the dealer he is close to. Thats why I decided to change my clutch cable in the mean time, which originally I was going to do after everything else was done.

Bummer part is hobby shop is closed tomorrow and I am in TAPS class all week, so I "may" have a chance to get back to the hobby shop sometime for this weekend hopefully to make some progress.

Harley is funny, they are happy to sell you the service manual but they draw the line on tools. Maybe they want us to use them as coloring books

No biggy, the tools can often be found far cheaper like on Amazon. Except for Jims tools, I guess those things are made out of diamonds and gold.

If you find a dealer with decent parts guys, consider yourself lucky. The guys at my local are great. Wouldn't bring a wheelbarrow into the service dept., though.
