This is what I did.
There is also trim pieces you can get that go over your cap. Skulls, eagles, etc. You can now throw a set of them on!
By the way what gauge you end up with?
Here's some MoCo trim pieces that are about $15 each:
When I put the combo gauge on my '08 FXD - the digital gauge on the new gauge was pretty damn close to what was on the old analog gauge... They both run off the same sender after all. But after all this is a Harley we are talking about, and the gauges are about as accurate as reading tea leaves...
Wasn't there a thread I seen on here where someone took a tennis ball, cut it st.nd put it over the threads on a stock gas cap. He then pressed it in to the fuel gauge side.
So, the pic on HD's site for the speedo shows the gas cap replaced with the flush mount cap... One would think that the hole in the tank would have threads on it so one could throw a gas cap in there....
If I get time, I'll take my fuel cap off the street bob and try it in the hole for the fuel gauge on my fat bob - they have identical caps...
I was hoping I could just get a stock chrome cap like I have already.
Last weekend I replaced the tank fuel gauge with a dummy cap. Normal gas cap will not not work as a replacement, as the left hole is significantly larger. You can simply pull out the gauge, just take care not to tear off the cables.
Also, the digital fuel gauge in the speedo will not work properly and constantly show low fuel if the tank gauge is disconnected, as the signal is routed through it. So you have to gut the tank gauge (it will be significantly damaged in the process) and put the circuit part pack in the hole, then install whatever dummy you like. I made some pictures of the disassembled gauge, if you're interested.

If your fuel gauge is like that on my FXDL, it snaps down using three ridges in the recessed hole. It is not threaded.
Huh. Now that is not very good planning on HDs part to sell me a dummy cap for $75 when doing this.
Not really interested in gutting it.
Yes my cap has three snap prong things. Was hoping that the lip on the tank was threaded anyway. I pulled my fat Bob one out to peek at it and could barely see anything on account of the wires being so darn short.
