Looking at a FXDL with no Security System or ABS.
SS $395 ABS $795
Is a HD Factory Security System and ABS worth the money?
I'm told that if someone's going to steal your bike and they want it bad enough they will take it.
ABS makes sense on larger bikes but not on lighter bikes like FXDL or Sportster.
I need to check with insurance company if the savings for both is worth buying those two options......Security System and ABS.
ABS? Probably worth it, especially if it gives you enough of an insurance discount to make it a wash in a few years.
Security system? Not so much. Pro thieves don't usually drive bikes away, they drag them into the back of a truck. Ever notice how hardly anyone pays attention to car alarms? Plus, the security system runs the battery down. I could never let mine go for more than a week without being on a battery tender. But maybe you can get enough of an insurance discount to eventually make that worth it too. I didn't get any discount for having the security system, so maybe that says something about their effectiveness.
Search for the Harley abs video. That's what made me a believer in the abs system. I like the factory alarm( I don't have the siren just the key fob) it's one thing less I have to lock. I just lock the steering neck and walk away.
ABS is one thing HD really should include. I didn't come on my bike but I would've preferred it if given the option. I've had less expensive bikes that included ABS as a standard option. I've had ABS on a HD and it worked pretty well. If you want to see impressive ABS, check out the ABS on the new Ducati Multistrada. A dealer buddy of mine was in Barcelona at a Ducati event...full 4 finger panic stops, in a corner, in the rain...not an issue. HD has a ways to go on braking but that shouldn't be a surprise to most folks familiar with the brand.
The ABS is a nice safety net. More stopping power is definitely not a bad thing. Security system really doesn't do much, unless you're dealing with really lazy thieves.
Not sure if u know but the alarm is a 2 part deal. $400 for alarm but no siren so it only blinks the lights. Then the siren for another $100 I think. I have the complete system and key fob pager thingy. I like it for when u are at a bar or out and about u can leave your bike and if someone touches it u will get a page and it will let u know. Well to about 3/4 a mile away. Other than that it's not goin to stop a true lowlife!
One thing that's nice is I never lock my bike, just shut it off and walk away. It will wake u up for sure if someone moves it. I however hate the fact every time u shut the bike off it arms and makes that gay noise like vehicles alarms do.
Oh I almost forgot the most important thing is to keep your insurance paid up to date!! That's the best anyone can do, then forget about it and enjoy the ride!!
Called insurance and they said no discount for alarm and ONLY $2.00 saving per 6month premium cycle on ABS. Both seem hardly worth it.
Hummm could use the savings on other bike toys.

Don't think the reason to have ABS on a bike is to save a couple of dollars on insurance.
