Hello everyone. I am in search of information about the check engine light on my 1997 FXDWG (caburated, 80 c.i. Evolution). What does this light cover on my 97, and how can I find codes and reset them? The speedo shows no codes, so there must be a different way? The light flickers at idle then lights solid at operating rpm's. It's driving me bat #@$# crazy, I'm gonna end up running over something because the distraction the light causes...HELP?!?!?!?!

Reason: wasn't finished
Man, it's been quite a while but I believe you can read the codes on your '97 by counting the flashes of the check engine light.
With ignition off switch it on for 2 - 3 seconds, switch it off for 2 -3 seconds, switch ignition back on and the engine light should flash rapidly several times then pause; if there's a code the engine light will flash slowly, count the flashes, that's the first number; the engine light will pause then slowly flash the second number to give you the two digit trouble code.
The engine light will then flash rapidly again and if there is another code it will display it in the same way; it will follow that pattern until all codes have been displayed.
At least that's how I remember my '98... hope that helps a bit
Nope, not oil related....I found this out after replacing springs, cleaning screens, and installing a gauge...the oil pressure light is in the row of lights below the speedo.
Well Architect, I was told it is as it came but honestly count yourself lucky to not have this friggin light...it's gonna cause me to ride over something because it draws way too much of my attention...
Update- It is something with the charging system. Thanks everyone...
As stated in post #5 but maintain the run switch in ON position I believe.
Reset was to disconnect the battery cables.
Are you 100 % sure the battery cables are tight at all (4) FOUR ends.
To be clearer, that battery cables have good connections at all FOUR ends.
At the battery and at the other end of wires.
