Default Horn help

I have a 2015 FXDL. I hate where the horn button is. It really became apparent yesterday when I really needed it and I wasn't hitting the button without looking.

I'm looking for a solution to two problems:

1. Horn button location
2. The horn itself.

The horn sucks. I want something louder. I don't see tons of options for a Dyna airhorn. I'd like to install a loud *** horn but with keeping the existing in place. I'd like a new button that is in a more comfortable location on the bars for me to hit without looking for it.

I appreciate all your input in advanced.

On the button location:
Practice finding it while you're riding, until you can do it in your sleep and without thinking.

Rivco air horn. Mine is black, but it comes in chrome. Compressor is between the battery and fuse box.

Do you have to bust into the primary to mount that horn ???

OP: you can mount an aftermarket horn button several different places, bars, dash, etc. but most all of them will look out of place IMO. Most parts houses have "universal" horn switches that all have different mounting options.
I agree with Warp on just practicing hitting your button. I've seen, or heard, many people hitting the dang thing when going for their turn signal.

I think your stuck with just a slightly higher DB horn if you want it to look totally original. If you want to go the air horn route there isn't a ton of options that are Dyna specific. If you can find a place to mount them there are a few aftermarket universal style air horns. I would say they don't look near as good as the ones that Odin has.

Yes thanks, I was just about to ask that. The '14 and later FXDL's have the front mount horn and there doesn't seems to be any conversion kit that I can find. I'm no mechanic let alone a fabricator so I'm pretty limited on what is available aftermarket. Harley has a louder one that may fit (it says in their catalog it's for Sportsters). It's a whopping 5db louder.... Whoopy f*ckin dooooo!

And as some have said I guess I should just practice reaching for the switch while riding to get it in memory. It's always practice practice practice isn't it...

Haha! Sorry for any confusion...my primary is off being powder coated. You do not need to pull it off. It's a pretty easy install. You insert the compressor from behind the rear cylinder and zip tie it in place. The horn bolts to where the stock horn goes. Probably took all of 20 minutes to install.

The '14 and up FXDL's have the ignition switch mounted where the side mount horn goes on other models. I too hate the '58 VW Beetle horn they have mounted to the front of the frame but I have yet to find a sanitary way to mount a better sounding/louder horn.

^THIS^ But remember, drive defensive. A horn is going to serve you no purpose if you are driving faster then the traffic around you. In fact, if someone pulls out in front of the car in front of you and he stops abruptly, you had better have some distance or were traveling slower because you are going to run into him.

I wrote a letter about this, horn usage, to Cycle World magazine. It was printed in the 8/15 edition. I use my horns to 'announce' my presence to people before they turn left, or pull out of a side street, in front of me. I know it helps because of times a cage driver and I were looking each other in the eye, but it was only after using my horn that a look of recognition appeared on the face of the cage driver.

A louder horn wouldn't be a bad idea, but I have had success with 'metrics' sorry excuses for horns for decades. It took me a while, and a lot of left turn signals, to get used to the horn button, on a Harley compared to a metric, but it is definitely worth doing.

OK. A 10 db increase in sound is DOUBLE the sound of the lower number. So, while I agree that the later model HD horn, which is something like 45 db, as apposed to 40 db, ain't all that loud, is it significanlty louder than the lower db horn.

Keep that in mind when you decide to buy a 135 db (!) Minibeast horn.
